Actor Kit Harington has given a new signal about the possibility of returning to the world of Game of Thrones. After years of closing the door on reprising Jon Snow, he now says he does not rule out reviving the sequel project that was once cancelled.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington revealed that development of the sequel had run for about two years before it was ultimately halted. According to him, the decision to stop the project was made because the creative team, including HBO and George R.R. Martin, could not find the right story. "I still think there's a space where something could work. I wouldn't have been involved from the start if I didn't believe it," he said.
Harington added that he had insisted the project not be forced if it did not find a satisfying formula. "After thinking for a while, I was the one who said this isn't the right story," he explained. This statement contrasts with his stance in December 2025, when he firmly rejected the possibility of voicing Jon Snow in an audiobook, saying, "No, for God's sake, I don't want to go near it. I spent 10 years doing that."
Harington's change of heart is tied to his career journey after Game of Thrones ended. He feels more comfortable with the character now after working on various other projects. "I think my decision back then was right, because now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world, with its place in my life," he said. Since 2022, reports of a sequel following Jon Snow in exile beyond the Wall had surfaced, but two years later the project was officially cancelled.
For the global entertainment industry, Harington's signal is a breath of fresh air amid the sluggish development of the Game of Thrones franchise after the main series. Although the prequel House of the Dragon has been a success, the Westeros universe still leaves many stories untapped. HBO's chief content officer, Casey Bloys, previously said the company is open to new ideas as long as there is a strong vision. However, there has been no official confirmation of a revival of the Jon Snow sequel project.
On the other hand, Harington is preparing for another major project: he will join the second season of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart. The series will debut later this year with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and Harington had already voiced the character in the latest Audible audiobook. This busy filming schedule could be a consideration in whether he will truly return to Game of Thrones any time soon.
For fans in Indonesia, this news certainly raises hopes. Game of Thrones has a fanatical fan base in the country, and the potential return of Jon Snow could be a draw for the streaming platforms that carry the series. However, it is worth remembering that the project is still at the discussion stage. If it does come to fruition, will Jon Snow's story beyond the Wall be able to repeat the success of the previous eight seasons, or will it instead be an anticlimax? Time will tell, but at least the door is now open again.
