Jay-Z, the rapper and music entrepreneur whose real name is Shawn Carter, has finally gained legal clarity after the woman who accused him of rape in 2000 formally withdrew all allegations. The unnamed woman stated in a declaration obtained by Rolling Stone that she never met or spoke with Carter, and that there was no truth to her allegations.
The case began with a lawsuit filed in 2024, in which the woman claimed Jay-Z and Sean Combs (P Diddy) drugged and raped her at a party after the 2000 MTV Awards when she was 13 years old. Jay-Z and Combs both denied the claims, and Jay-Z's lawyer called the timeline of events impossible. The lawsuit was later withdrawn in 2025, and Jay-Z filed a countersuit.
In her latest statement, the woman asserted, “Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I never met or spoke with Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never did anything inappropriate to me.” She added that her false allegations had caused suffering and damage that could not be fully repaired.
The woman's lawyer, James Blair Newman Jr, stated that his client still feels she was a victim of sexual assault, but was mistaken in identifying Carter. Meanwhile, lawyer Tony Buzbee, who previously represented the woman, said the new claim was new information to him. Jay-Z is still pursuing his lawsuit against Buzbee and his colleagues, accusing them of malicious prosecution.
“The trauma experienced by my wife, my children, my loved ones, and myself cannot be ignored,” Jay-Z said when the case was withdrawn. In an interview with GQ in March, he said he was very angry and stressed that such allegations should not be made without certainty.
The case highlights the complexity of handling sexual assault allegations, especially when public figures are involved. In Indonesia, similar cases often draw public attention and raise questions about victim protection and fair legal process. The public is increasingly critical of unproven allegations, but also demands serious law enforcement for victims of sexual assault.
