The Hollywood film industry is once again preparing an erotic thriller titled Non Compos Mentis, to be directed by Paul Schrader. Three major names—Cara Delevingne, Sam Worthington, and Liam Hemsworth—have been confirmed to play lead roles in a love triangle full of intrigue. Production is scheduled to begin next month in New York, with additional casting still being finalized.
The screenplay, written by Schrader himself, had previously been linked to actors Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Pidgeon, and Dianne Wiest. However, the lead cast changed shortly before production, indicating an adjustment in creative direction. Non Compos Mentis, which literally means "not of sound mind" in Latin, explores psychological themes and upper-class family conflict.
According to the official synopsis, the story centers on two brothers from a wealthy family who are coping with their mother's decline due to dementia. One of them is a successful defense attorney in New York, while the other is a hard-edged corporate heir. Tension between them peaks when the attorney begins a secret relationship with a young woman, triggering a love triangle that leads to obsession, betrayal, and a struggle for control of the family fortune.
For Cara Delevingne, this project marks her return to acting after a long hiatus. In an interview with Sunday Times Culture, she revealed that she spent the past four years recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Delevingne highlighted the different standards in Hollywood for male and female actors regarding off-screen behavior. "Men can get away with it, but I can't name a female actress who was 'crazy' like I used to be," she said.
She also described how her out-of-control lifestyle affected her acting career. Delevingne admitted she often went out with stuntmen and neglected her health. "I was modeling too much, my skin was covered in psoriasis, my body seemed to say, 'I'll take care of this,'" she recalled. Now, she is grateful to be able to care for herself, her life, and her relationship with her partner, Minke.
"I struggled with ego, feeling people would forget me. But that actually made it possible for me to take care of myself, my life, and my relationship," Delevingne said.
Delevingne's return to the big screen also reflects the dynamics of the global entertainment industry, which is increasingly open about discussing mental health issues. In Indonesia, awareness of the importance of artists' recovery from industry pressure is beginning to grow, although it still faces stigma. Non Compos Mentis itself has the potential to highlight psychological complexity and dark family relationships, something rarely addressed in national cinema.
With a combination of a veteran director, a layered screenplay, and cast members seeking momentum, Non Compos Mentis could signal a new direction for erotic thrillers in the global market. But will the film be able to penetrate the Asian market, including Indonesia, given its themes and likely restrictive rating? Time will tell, but enthusiasm has already begun to build.
