Oscar-winning actor and director Michael B. Jordan has revealed his intention to take an extended break from the film industry throughout 2027. He shared the plan in an interview with Vogue, some time after finishing production on the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, scheduled for release next March. Jordan not only stars in the film but also sits in the director's chair and serves as a producer.
According to Jordan, the decision is not just an ordinary vacation. He said he needs time to reflect and process everything he has been through in recent years. “I might take the rest of next year for reflection,” he said, adding that his work pace has been nearly nonstop. He even joked about the possibility of early retirement and spending his life making anime.
The pressure before and after last year's Oscar win apparently took a toll on his physical condition. Jordan admitted he fell ill a day after the awards ceremony. He described the moment as a point where his body signaled him to pause after reaching the finish line. Nevertheless, the experience did not dampen his ambition to keep competing among Hollywood's top actors.
“I don't know if I could be satisfied just being a working actor. My competitive drive is too strong. Whatever I do, I want to be among the best,” Jordan said.
Ben Affleck, who serves as both mentor and close friend, offered his view on Jordan's talent. He said Jordan has qualities like Cary Grant, but with a stronger, more masculine physical presence. Affleck believes Jordan can be convincing across genres, whether as a fighter, a vulnerable figure, or an intelligent person. “Every time I watch his films, I always feel that it is the real him,” Affleck said.
Jordan's decision to step back briefly from the Hollywood spotlight is unusual for an actor at the peak of his career. In an industry that demands high productivity, such a move could signal that stars are beginning to consider mental health and work-life balance. This phenomenon is also visible among younger filmmakers, who are increasingly vocal about the importance of creative breaks.
For Indonesia's entertainment market, Jordan's plan could affect the release schedule of films involving his name. Domestic distributors and exhibitors may need to adjust their promotional strategies, especially if his upcoming projects are delayed. On the other hand, this break could open space for local talent to fill empty screening slots, while also pushing the national film industry to more aggressively offer quality content.
Going forward, the public will wait to see whether Jordan actually keeps his promise to step back temporarily, or is tempted by incoming offers for new projects. What is clear is that his statement has sparked discussion about how an artist should manage a career amid the relentless pressure of the industry. Will Jordan's move set a precedent for other stars to dare to take a similar break?
