Ben Affleck Wanted Jennifer Garner as His Wife in Animals, His Ex Declined

Actor and director Ben Affleck revealed that he had planned to cast his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, as a married couple in his latest film, Animals. However, the plan fell through after Garner declined the offer, saying she did not want to bring the "baggage" of their personal relationship onto the big screen.

Animals itself tells the story of the kidnapping of a child of a Los Angeles mayoral candidate. In the early project, Affleck had enlisted his close friend, Matt Damon, to play the politician, and he hoped Garner could fill the wife role. According to Affleck, working with Garner would have offered an added benefit: more time with their children—Violet (20), Finn (17), and Samuel (14)—because their shooting schedules could be synchronized. "I thought, Jen Garner would be amazing for this role," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Even so, the project was delayed, and when it was revived, Damon was no longer available due to his commitment to The Odyssey. Affleck then decided to play the politician himself. But Garner held firm on not getting involved. "I talked to Jen, and she said, 'We don't want to do that. You're just going to get baggage'," Affleck recalled. He realized that bringing personal dynamics to the screen could backfire, especially since the couple in the film is depicted as having a broken marriage.

Even so, Affleck has not closed the door on working with Garner in the future. He praised his ex-wife as an "amazing" person and said he was very grateful for their current good relationship. "I would love to work with her. She's amazing, and we're really good friends. I'm very grateful to her, and we have a great relationship. I still want to work with her in the future, but what you don't want to do is take on the audience's baggage and let it hurt you," he explained.

After Garner declined, Affleck shifted the role to Kerry Washington, whom he got to know during the Hollywood writers' strike. According to Affleck, Washington has a combination of elegance and warmth, which convinced him she was right for the role. "She's so smooth, but also so warm. I thought, 'Oh my God, she's amazing for this'," he said.

The decision to cast Washington also brought a change in the story's approach. Affleck did not want to ignore the fact that their characters are in an interracial marriage. He recalled telling Washington, "What I don't want to do is ignore it. This is a film about real life and real people, and our ethnicity is as important as the way people see us as anything else." From there, they built a backstory that opened the door to unexpected and honest moments.
