A Malaysian citizen identified by the initial S has formally reported a mid-ranking National Police (Polri) officer identified by the initial Kombes F to the Bareskrim Polri. The report, registered under number LP/B/379/VII/2026/SPKT/BARESKRIM POLRI and dated 20 August 2026, accuses Kombes F of involvement in fraud and embezzlement of funds from a gold mine investment in North Sulawesi. The investment S put in is said to have reached Rp58.5 billion, while only about Rp4 billion was returned.
Kombes F currently serves as Head of Subdirectorate I at the Directorate of Narcotics Crime of Bareskrim Polri. S's legal counsel, Bagas Pangestu Pribadi, said his client received an update on the investigation's progress when he visited Bareskrim on Tuesday (15/9/2026). According to Bagas, investigators have checked the mine site and questioned the complainant and several witnesses. The next stage is a deeper review of documents and questioning of the reported party.
The chronology began in May 2025 when S was introduced to Kombes F by a third party at the Bareskrim Polri building. In that meeting, Kombes F offered a gold mine investment and assured that the project was legal and that its permit would be issued soon. Kombes F's status as a law enforcement officer was a particular draw for S. According to Bagas, Kombes F also promised a mine yield of up to 100 kilograms of gold.
The investment was made in stages. The first stage amounted to Rp26 billion in May 2025. When the permit still had not been issued, S was offered another investment of about Rp13 billion in June or July 2025. By October 2025, the total funds handed over reached Rp58.5 billion. However, the promised profits never materialized, and only about Rp4 billion was returned.
"We received a report on the progress of the investigation into our report regarding the alleged fraud and embezzlement of a gold mine investment reportedly carried out by a Kombes with the initial F," Bagas said at Bareskrim Polri, Jakarta.
Kombes F denies all the accusations and says he will report S back. He stressed that he was not involved in the fraud as alleged. As of the publication of this news, there has been no official statement from Kombes F or Bareskrim Polri regarding developments in this case.
The case has surfaced amid growing investment interest in Indonesia's gold mining sector. North Sulawesi is known as one of the main gold-producing regions, with a number of large and small-scale mines. However, not all investment offers in this sector have clear permits. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has repeatedly warned the public to be cautious of illegal investments, including those claiming to be mine projects.
For investors, this case is a reminder of the importance of due diligence. Ensuring a project's legality, checking mining business permits, and not being easily tempted by promises of fantastic profits are mandatory steps. Trust in law enforcement figures does not automatically remove the need for verification. If proven, this case could damage the integrity of the Polri institution and tarnish the national investment climate.
Bareskrim investigators are now required to work transparently and professionally. The public will scrutinize whether the legal process proceeds without favoritism, given that the reported party is an active officer. Meanwhile, S hopes his funds can be returned. Will this case become a bad precedent for law enforcement, or will it instead prove that no one is above the law in Indonesia?
