A traffic accident has again claimed a life in the Tanjung Priok Port area, North Jakarta. A motorcyclist died at the scene after his vehicle allegedly ran a red light and collided with a trailer truck on Tuesday (15/9) evening.
The fatal incident occurred at around 18.05 WIB on Jalan Raya Pelabuhan, Koja. According to the Head of the Traffic Accident Unit at North Jakarta Metro Police, AKP Edy Wibowo, a trailer truck with license plate B-9610-UEH driven by RG was traveling from north to south after leaving JICT Port. Upon reaching Pos 0, the truck collided with a Suzuki Satria Fu-150 motorcycle with license plate B-3356-UFQ ridden by MJ.
"The motorcycle ran the red light, while a trailer truck was passing from the opposite direction, so the accident was unavoidable," said an officer from the Command Center of the Jakarta Fire Department, as quoted from its official statement. Due to the hard impact, the victim's motorcycle was dragged under the truck for about 10 meters. Friction between the motorcycle's metal frame and the asphalt sparked a fire that quickly burned both vehicles.
The Jakarta Fire Department received the report of the incident at 18.14 WIB. Three pump trucks and 15 personnel were deployed to the location to extinguish the fire that burned both vehicles. The extinguishing process took about 15 minutes and was declared complete at 18.29 WIB.
Police are still investigating the exact cause of the accident, including examining video footage circulating on social media. The footage shows the moments when the motorcycle ran the red light before being hit by the trailer truck. As of this news being published, there has been no official statement regarding a possible suspect or other violations in this incident.
"We are still gathering statements from witnesses and processing the crime scene. The temporary focus is to determine the cause of the accident and proceed with the law in accordance with the provisions," said AKP Edy Wibowo.
The Tanjung Priok Port area is known as a busy route for heavy vehicles, especially container trucks entering and leaving the port. The high volume of large vehicles in this area increases the risk of accidents, especially if motorcyclists are less alert or violate the rules. This incident again highlights the need for enforcing traffic discipline and improving safety in the port industrial area.
For businesses and workers in the logistics sector, accidents like this can affect the smooth flow of goods and operational costs. Delivery delays due to temporary road closures or vehicle damage are risks that must be anticipated. In addition, this incident is a reminder that driving safety is not only an individual responsibility but also part of the sustainability of the national supply chain.
Going forward, police are expected to increase supervision at points prone to traffic violations, especially in port areas. Socialization of driving safety for motorcyclists and truck drivers also needs to be intensified. Without concrete preventive measures, the potential for similar accidents could recur, given the high intensity of vehicles on that route.
