The Commander of the Indonesian Air Force Military Police Center (Puspom TNI AU), Air Vice Marshal Daan Sulfi, revealed the sequence of events that led to the death of Serda Ahmad Muzammil at the Galaksi Psychology Mess, Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base Complex, East Jakarta. The victim died after allegedly being assaulted by several of his seniors on Wednesday (9/9) night. In a press conference on Wednesday (16/9), Daan laid out a chronology showing how a communication issue between personnel ended in violence.
According to Daan, the incident began on Tuesday (8/9) when Serda MTS contacted his junior, Serda RP, to ask for administrative help. MTS was about to go on an out-of-town assignment and asked RP to enter his name into the Air Force aircraft manifest. The conversation did not go smoothly: RP hung up in the middle of the discussion. MTS felt offended and angry at the attitude.
The next day, at around 21.10 WIB, MTS gathered his juniors under the pretext of coaching. RP was then subjected to physical punishment in the form of 100 push-ups and sit-ups. The situation heated up when three of MTS's colleagues—Serda MAD, Serda AH, and Serda JM—arrived at the location at around 21.40 WIB. Serda JM then punched the victim, Serda Ahmad Muzammil, three times in the chest with his bare hands. After the third punch, the victim fell, went limp, and then lost consciousness.
Daan explained that Serda JM claimed he intended to give advice to Muzammil, who was considered the most senior among his three juniors. "Serda JM took the initiative to give guidance, to let him know that because the deceased was the most senior among the three. So, the point was that you have to tell your juniors, that is your responsibility to your juniors," he said. However, the advice was accompanied by punching. "But that warning was instead carried out through assault," Daan added.
After the victim lost consciousness, the perpetrators took him to the nearest hospital. However, Muzammil's life could not be saved; he was declared dead at around 23.45 WIB. Puspom TNI AU has named four suspects: Serda MTS, Serda MAD, Serda JM, and Serda AH. They are now undergoing further examination.
This case has once again brought up the issue of seniority culture and the coaching mechanism within the military. Physical punishment packaged as "coaching" often escapes oversight, especially in closed environments such as mess halls. The incident at Halim Air Base adds to the long list of internal violence cases that end fatally, while also testing the institution's commitment to enforcing discipline without violating the rights of its members.
For the public, this event reflects that cultural reform within the TNI, particularly in the senior-junior mentoring pattern, has not been fully implemented. Pressure to resolve the case transparently and fairly will grow, especially because the victim was an active soldier who died within his own unit's environment. Daan emphasized that the investigation will reveal the role of each suspect, but he has not yet detailed the articles they are charged under.
Going forward, the question is not merely who is guilty, but how the TNI AU ensures that no more "coaching" ends in loss of life. Without systemic improvement, the case of Serda Ahmad Muzammil will only become a grim statistic that repeats itself.
