Jonathan Burkardt was the decider as Eintracht Frankfurt held hosts Paderborn to a 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga matchweek 9 at the Home Deluxe Arena on Saturday (26/10/2024). Burkardt's second goal in the 90+3 minute not only salvaged a point but also underlined his quality as a goal-hungry striker.
Frankfurt were dominant from the start. Lilian Brassier and Ritsu Dōan fired shots off target in the first ten minutes. However, Paderborn gradually fought back and nearly took the lead first when Ruben Müller failed to connect with Santiago Castaneda's cross at the far post. Instead, Frankfurt broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Farès Chaïbi, who drove the ball from the left and was finished by Burkardt with a shot into the far corner.
Paderborn responded. Stefano Marino hit the crossbar before Raphael Obermair equalized just before half-time. Obermair latched onto Müller's pass and rounded goalkeeper Noah Atubolu to make it 1-1.
In the second half, Paderborn were more aggressive. Müller squandered a golden chance from close range after Obermair's low cross. Chaïbi hit the post for Frankfurt before the match turned in the 73rd minute. Substitute Marvin Pieringer was fouled by Brassier in the penalty area and converted the penalty himself to put Paderborn 2-1 up. Shortly after, Baum received a second yellow card for stepping on Laurin Curda's heel, forcing Frankfurt to play with ten men.
Despite being a man down, Frankfurt did not give up. A golden chance came from a corner in the fourth minute of injury time. Atubolu went forward and won the aerial duel, laying the ball off to Burkardt, who cleverly finished with his heel to squeeze through the gap between goalkeeper Nahuel Noll's legs. The score became 2-2 and Frankfurt took home a dramatic point.
This moral victory shows Frankfurt's character in rising under pressure. Conversely, Paderborn failed to make the most of their numerical advantage and had to settle for a share of the points. The result also affects the race in the middle of the table, where every point matters.
For Frankfurt, Burkardt's performance is a positive signal up front. Paderborn, meanwhile, need to evaluate the effectiveness of their attack when they have a man advantage. The question going forward: can Frankfurt maintain this momentum, and will Paderborn learn from their lapse in the final minutes?
