VfB Stuttgart finally secured back-to-back wins in the Bundesliga this season after beating Werder Bremen 1-0 at the MHP-Arena on Saturday (26/10/2024). Maximilian Mittelstädt's seventh-minute goal proved the difference in a tight, high-pressure match.
The win also halted Bremen's impressive run, having previously been unbeaten in seven league matches. For Stuttgart, the result is valuable capital after their Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, and it marks a consistency beginning to take shape under the coach.
Stuttgart were aggressive from the start. Grischa Prömel's low cross from the right side of the penalty area was finished by Mittelstädt with a first-time shot into the roof of the net. The lead held until half-time even as Bremen tried to press through Eren Dinkçi and Youri Regeer. Stuttgart goalkeeper Dennis Seimen was outstanding with several crucial saves, including denying Regeer's one-on-one chance after a pass from Niclas Füllkrug.
In the second half, Bremen raised the intensity. Coach Daniel Thioune brought on Justin Njinmah and Chuki to add attacking power. However, the Stuttgart defense commanded by Finn Jeltsch withstood the onslaught. Bremen's golden chances through Dinkçi and Regeer went begging, while Stuttgart nearly doubled their lead through a corner routine that ended against the post.
"We knew Bremen were in their best form, but we focused on our own game. The early goal gave us control, and disciplined defending earned us the three points," Mittelstädt said after the match.
The win lifted Stuttgart to a safer position in the provisional standings, while Bremen had to accept their first defeat after seven unbeaten matches. Nevertheless, Thioune felt his team were dominant. "We created more chances, but football is decided by goals. We have to be sharper in front of goal," he said.
For Stuttgart, consistency is the next challenge. These two consecutive wins must be backed up with positive results in the coming matches, especially with the congested Champions League and Bundesliga schedule. Bremen, meanwhile, need to bounce back quickly to hold their place near the top.
A big question now arises: can Stuttgart maintain their momentum and compete in the European zone, or is this just a brief flash of form? What is clear is that efficiency and tactical discipline were the recipe for their win over Bremen.
