Marc Marquez won the MotoGP Qatar sprint race at the Lusail Circuit on Saturday (12/4/2025), after a controversial contact with Marco Bezzecchi sent the Italian rider crashing and out of the title fight. The win opens the way for Marquez to seal the world title in Sunday's main race, provided he finishes first and Jorge Martin fails to score points.
The incident between Marquez and Bezzecchi occurred on lap four as the two fought for the lead. Bezzecchi, attempting to overtake at the first corner, made contact with Marquez, who had run slightly wide. Bezzecchi crashed, while Marquez escaped without penalty. The stewards' decision immediately sparked debate, especially since the incident also ended Bezzecchi's chances of staying in the title fight.
Meanwhile, Jorge Martin produced a heroic ride. Despite a broken right wrist, the Aprilia rider was able to finish third. The result was not enough to halt Marquez's charge, but it at least delayed the title celebration. Martin finished behind Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati), who overtook him on the final lap, and Marquez, who finished ahead of the field.
The sprint race itself was halted on lap two after a horrific crash involving Francesco Bagnaia and Fermin Aldeguer. Bagnaia, running in fifth, was hit by Aldeguer from the inside and thrown from his bike. The Ducati rider was briefly unconscious but was later confirmed conscious and rushed to hospital. Aldeguer was given a two long lap penalty for the restarted race, held over 10 laps.
In the restarted race, Marquez led from the start. Bezzecchi and Martin applied pressure, but Marquez was able to pull away after setting the fastest laps on lap five and lap seven. His lead briefly exceeded one second, breaking the resistance of Martin, who kept trying to stay close despite his physical condition not being at its best.
Behind them, Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) won his duel with Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) to finish fourth. Pedro Acosta (KTM) had to settle for sixth after being involved in a tight battle. Ai Ogura, Enea Bastianini, and Iker Lecuona completed the list of riders who scored points in this dramatic sprint.
"I can't say much about the incident. I just pushed hard and the result was as hoped," Marquez said after the race, as quoted by Motorsport.com.
With this result, the fight for the 2025 MotoGP world title officially comes down to two names: Marquez and Martin. Bezzecchi, previously the closest challenger, had to bury his dream after the incident at Lusail. Attention now turns to Sunday's main race, where Marquez has a strong chance to lock up the title. But Martin, despite his injury, continues to show a high fighting spirit. Will Marquez seal the title in Qatar, or can Martin extend the drama to the final round?
