The Rhine Derby between Cologne and Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (local time) will be the stage for two rising young talents: Saïd El Mala and Ibrahim Maza. Both are 20 years old and have become the backbone of their respective teams, making this match at the RheinEnergieStadion more than just a clash of regional pride—it is also a showcase for the Bundesliga's new generation.
Their paths to the top were not instant. In May 2025, Maza had just finished the season with Hertha Berlin in Bundesliga 2, finishing 11th. His talent was already visible, but the second tier was deemed less than ideal for honing his potential. Meanwhile, El Mala scored 13 goals in 32 matches for Viktoria Cologne in the 3. Liga, which then attracted the same-city club Cologne, newly promoted to the Bundesliga. The challenge was steep: to become the team's icon without any experience above the third tier.
Yet El Mala answered the doubts with 13 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches in his debut season, also becoming the club's top scorer. That performance earned him a place in the Germany national team squad in November 2025, though he did not get any minutes against Luxembourg. On the other side, Maza moved to Leverkusen in the same summer, when the club went through major upheaval: the departure of several stars and coach Xabi Alonso, plus the arrival of more than 15 new players, most of them under 23. Instability was inevitable, compounded by Erik ten Hag's brief tenure that lasted only three competitive matches.
Even so, Maza gradually found his rhythm. He drifted in and out of the starting XI, but in the second half of the season he became a first-choice pick under Kasper Hjulmand, starting Leverkusen's last 14 Bundesliga matches. His performances at the 2026 World Cup with Algeria—appearing in all four matches—further cemented his name. Now, he is among the 10 nominees for the 2026 Kopa Trophy as Europe's best young player, even receiving a vote from Lionel Messi.
This season, both have proven that their strong form is no fluke. El Mala, who signed a new contract after turning down interest from Borussia Dortmund, has scored four goals in nine matches across all competitions. His presence is crucial: Cologne have lost only once in the 15 matches in which he has scored. He also made his senior debut for Germany under Jürgen Klopp in September. His younger brother, Malek, is also starting to draw attention after scoring on his debut for the Cologne senior team against Union Berlin in matchweek 8.
Even so, El Mala is not yet a finished product. He is indeed one of the most successful dribblers in the Bundesliga, but his take-on success rate is only 39 percent, and his average of successful passes (17 per match) is the lowest among Cologne players. Coach René Wagner has openly asked him to look for his teammates more often. "I'm glad Saïd is here. He is a top player for us. He always gives everything and is a role model for the others," Wagner said, as quoted by Bundesliga.com.
In the Leverkusen camp, Maza has become the attacking engine under Carles Martínez. In eight Bundesliga matches, he has always started, scoring three goals (matching last season's total) and providing two assists. Only Patrik Schick has been involved in more goals for the team. Maza is the creative hub with 25 successful dribbles—the most in the team—and 43 shot involvements, trailing only Harry Kane and Michael Olise across the entire league. His off-the-ball contribution is also outstanding: an average of 11.7 km per match and 111 duels won, the most in the league.
"He is a very talented player and gives a lot to us. He is always ready and has a great desire to improve. With a player like him, who can contribute both offensively and defensively, we can always move forward and improve," Martínez said after the win over Freiburg in matchweek 6.
This Rhine Derby will be the real test for both prodigies. El Mala and Maza are not only competing to lead their teams to victory, but also to prove they deserve to be the new face of the Bundesliga. For Cologne, a win would reinforce El Mala's position as a new idol while maintaining momentum after promotion. For Leverkusen, three points would further establish Maza as the replacement for the creative role left by last season's stars.
The question is, who will shine brighter under derby pressure? The answer will be visible on the RheinEnergieStadion pitch on Sunday night.
