Manchester United have taken concrete steps to secure the services of Eddie Howe as their new manager, a signal that Michael Carrick's future at Old Trafford is increasingly uncertain. The move comes after United's fourth Premier League defeat of the season, which left the team languishing on the brink of the relegation zone.
The 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Saturday, through second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, left United only goal difference away from the red zone. With a tough match against Aston Villa next, there is a real possibility United will be in the bottom three by the upcoming international break.
Even so, Carrick has not entirely lost support. An impressive first-half display against Chelsea, despite failing to convert chances, is said to have given the management a little room to delay a decision. Carrick will also remain in charge when the team faces AS Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
According to a report by The Guardian, United have approached Howe's camp, with the manager currently without a club after leaving Newcastle United at the end of last season. Howe is reported to be open to a move to Old Trafford, even though he remains under contract with Newcastle until 2027. However, United would have to pay around ยฃ3 million in compensation if they want to recruit him.
"I take a lot of positives from the first half. But we lost control again and let the match slip away. This has happened too often, and we have to do something immediately," Carrick said after the match against Chelsea.
Howe is not without achievements. During his time at Newcastle, he led the club to two Champions League qualifications and won the EFL Cup. However, Newcastle finished 12th last season, and Howe has yet to prove himself at a top European club. By contrast, Julian Nagelsmann, who is also under consideration, has a more glittering track record with the Bundesliga title at Bayern Munich in 2022.
For Manchester United, this decision is not merely about a change of manager but also about the club's long-term direction. Carrick, previously an assistant, is considered not yet able to lift the team's performance consistently. The defeat to Chelsea exposed the same problem: United struggle to sustain momentum and often lose control in the second half. Lisandro Martinez's red card made matters worse.
On the other hand, Howe is known as a coach capable of building teams with limited resources, but the challenge at Old Trafford is far greater. Pressure from fans and the expectation of immediate trophies could backfire if he fails to adapt. Meanwhile, Nagelsmann has experience managing big clubs, but he may not be available or interested in United's current project.
The final decision rests with the club board, which appears to still be giving Carrick one last chance to prove himself. The matches against Roma and Aston Villa will be decisive. If the results are poor again, it is not impossible that United will announce a new manager before the international break. Will Howe be the solution, or will Nagelsmann be chosen instead? The Old Trafford public waits anxiously.
