Vincent Kompany and Martín Demichelis will meet again, but this time not as Manchester City's centre-back pairing. Both now sit on the coaching bench and will face each other when Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig on Bundesliga matchday six. The meeting is a tactical test for two coaches who both left the pitch as players and immediately made their mark in Germany.
Their story began in September 2013. Kompany had been at City for five years and was captain when Demichelis arrived from Málaga. Although initially brought in as cover because of a Kompany injury, they became a defensive wall. Across 54 matches together in all competitions, City won 33 and lost only nine, including the 2013/14 Premier League title and two League Cups.
Kompany remembers Demichelis as an intelligent player. “He is a very intelligent player. When I played with him, he was older than me. I was stronger and faster because I was younger, but he still performed at the top level because of his understanding of the game,” Kompany said in an exclusive interview with the Bundesliga. “He has quality with the ball. We were successful together, winning the league. It will be nice to meet again, but now as coaches.”
The transition from player to coach is not always smooth, but both proved otherwise. Demichelis retired in 2017 after a brief return to Málaga, then coached Bayern's reserve team before taking charge of River Plate. Replacing Marcelo Gallardo, who won two Copa Libertadores, was no easy task, but Demichelis broke the club's points record in his first 17 matches and delivered three trophies in 18 months. After leaving River in 2024, he coached Monterrey for 10 months before being called by Mallorca in February 2026. Although he failed to save Mallorca from relegation due to a head-to-head defeat, Leipzig remained convinced to sign him.
Kompany's path was no less winding. He began his coaching career at Anderlecht, the club where he started his playing career, then led Burnley to promotion to the Premier League with more than 100 points in his first season. However, relegation with a record-low points total (24) in 2024 briefly tarnished his name. Even so, Bayern still signed him. Sporting director Christoph Freund called Kompany “a very ambitious young coach, bringing a lot of international experience, sensitive to players, and knowing exactly what has to happen on the pitch.” Those doubts vanished after Kompany delivered two Bundesliga titles in two seasons.
Both Kompany and Demichelis learned from world-class coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Ottmar Hitzfeld, and Jupp Heynckes. However, they have their own philosophies. Kompany stressed, “I don't see the game other than scoring goals.” Demichelis agreed, “I want to create a team that plays bravely, intensely, and attractively, is responsible on the pitch, and inspires the people of Leipzig with passion.” Both also demand hard work. Kompany challenges his squad to be “the hardest-working team,” while Demichelis emphasises reaction after mistakes. “I accept mistakes on the pitch. But the reaction after a mistake is the most important thing,” he said.
Their management approaches are also similar. Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano revealed, “He said it's okay to make mistakes. What he asks is that when you make a mistake, fix it. I felt his trust.” Demichelis also emphasises emotion. “One of the most important things is emotion,” he said when replacing Ole Werner at Leipzig. Kompany added, “Be hungry or go somewhere else. It's very simple.”
This duel is not merely a meeting of two former teammates. It is a clash of two young coaches bringing attacking football ideas and a high work ethic. Bayern currently lead the league in goals and possession, while Leipzig are close behind with a goal tally equal to Borussia Dortmund. Who will come out on top? The answer will be seen on the pitch, but one thing is certain: their friendship will be tested by their respective ambitions.
