Without a Point in Five Matches, Mönchengladbach Carve Out Grim Bundesliga History

Borussia Mönchengladbach have recorded the worst start in Bundesliga history this season. After five matches, Die Fohlen have yet to earn a single point and sit bottom of the table. A 1-2 defeat to FC Cologne in the Rhine derby was a heavy blow that underscored the crisis at the club nicknamed the Foals.
Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder acknowledged the situation is concerning. "We went through a similar situation last season and hope it does not happen again. Right now it is not good," he said in early September, shortly after sacking Eugen Polanski following four straight defeats. Alexander Blessin was then appointed to turn things around, but his debut ended in defeat at Cologne.
This is not the first time Gladbach have endured a poor start. Throughout Bundesliga history, they have failed to win in five opening matches seven times. Only in the 2015/16 season did they suffer five consecutive defeats at the start of the campaign. Even so, the data shows that going pointless on matchday five is not rare. Of the 64 Bundesliga seasons, 15 teams have gone without a point after five matches, while more than 50 teams had yet to win. The record for the longest wait for a win is held by Nuremberg in 2013/14, who did not win until matchday 18.
History offers hope. The team in last place after five matches is not always relegated. Since the modern Bundesliga era, only 22 of 64 teams have suffered that fate. In the last 26 years, that number has fallen to 12. Gladbach themselves staged a spectacular comeback in 2015/16, rising from a pointless slump to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League. That achievement remains the best turnaround in Bundesliga history.
Mid-season coaching changes are also nothing new. Half of the teams bottom of the table after matchday five (32 of 64) changed coaches during the season. Gladbach's management move to bring in Blessin fits that pattern. However, pressure remains high given the club's expectation to stay competitive in mid-table.
"We have to bounce back immediately. There is no time to dwell on the situation. Every match is a final," Schröder said in a separate statement.
Although statistically their chances of survival remain open, Gladbach cannot afford to be complacent. A tough schedule awaits, including matches against top teams. If they do not pick up points soon, the crisis could deepen. The question is whether Die Fohlen can repeat the miracle of 2015/16 or instead slide into the relegation abyss.
