Freiburg secured all three points in their home match against Schalke at Europa-Park Stadion on the fifth matchday of the Bundesliga. Despite playing with ten men from the 64th minute, the hosts still managed to score the winning goal in the 85th minute through a header from Keisuke Goto. The final score was 2-1 to Freiburg, lifting them to the top of the provisional standings, ahead of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
The match was fiercely contested from the start. Freiburg, who came in with 10 points from their four opening matches—a club record—immediately took the initiative. They took the lead in the 10th minute through Maximilian Eggestein, who pounced on a rebound after Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius parried Matthias Ginter's header. Schalke, unbeaten in their last three matches and with the second-best defense in the league, equalized in the 30th minute through Adrian Gantenbein. The goal came from a scramble in the penalty area after Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus punched the ball clear, and Gantenbein's shot deflected off another player before finding the net.
In the second half, Freiburg lost Yuito Suzuki, who received a second yellow card in the 64th minute for a foul on Soufiane El-Faouzi. Playing with ten men, Freiburg struggled to withstand Schalke's onslaught. Chances came one after another, including a Maximilian Wöber header that hit the crossbar. However, Freiburg's defense held firm. The Freiburg coach then brought on Vincenzo Grifo and Keisuke Goto in the 83rd minute to add attacking power. The decision proved decisive. Two minutes later, Grifo delivered a cross from the left and Goto headed the ball powerfully past Karius. Goto's first Bundesliga goal sealed a dramatic win for Freiburg.
The win was driven by an impressive performance from Maximilian Eggestein. Besides scoring the opening goal, he also covered the most distance of any Freiburg player, 12.3 kilometers, and topped the Fantasy Manager rankings with 263 points. His contribution in midfield was vital, both in defense and attack. Meanwhile, Schalke, who dominated after Freiburg lost a player, failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage. They created several chances, but poor finishing and Freiburg's tight defense sent them home empty-handed.
"We knew this would be a difficult match, especially after the red card. But the players showed incredible mentality. Goto's goal is proof that our hard work paid off," said the Freiburg coach in the post-match press conference.
With this result, Freiburg have 13 points from five matches and sit temporarily at the top of the table. Schalke remain mid-table with 7 points. The German league this season is showing tight competition, where non-favorite teams like Freiburg can challenge the dominance of Bayern and Dortmund. The big question is whether Freiburg can maintain this consistency until the end of the season. If so, they could well be the dark horses in the title race.
