Michael Douglas, a senior Hollywood actor, has revealed deep regret over the sex scene in the erotic film Basic Instinct (1992). In his memoir titled One Helluva Ride, Douglas recounts that his stubble caused skin irritation for his co-star, Sharon Stone. The scene, which took five days to shoot, left red marks and abrasions on Stone's upper thighs, making Douglas feel "very guilty."
Douglas, now 82 years old, writes that he and Stone agreed not to use body doubles. Stone even initially wore a covering over her sensitive area, but then decided to remove it for the sake of realism. "I had to put my face close to a rather sensitive area," Douglas writes. After several takes, Stone complained that Douglas's stubble was scratching her skin. Douglas then noticed the marks and felt responsible.
Beyond the story behind the steamy scene, Douglas also opens up about his romantic relationship with actress Jeanne Tripplehorn, who also starred in Basic Instinct at the time. Douglas admits he had a secret relationship with Tripplehorn while he was separated from his first wife, Diandra Luker. The relationship escaped media attention because public speculation focused instead on his chemistry with Stone. "They were so focused on the possibility of a relationship between Sharon and me that they missed the actual relationship that was happening between Jeanne and me," Douglas writes.
Douglas acknowledges that he and Tripplehorn worked hard to hide their relationship from the crew and cast. They spent a lot of time together, getting to know each other, and enjoying each other's company off set. Despite an age gap of nearly 20 years, Douglas admits he fell hard for Tripplehorn. However, he realized that starting a serious relationship after nearly 20 years of marriage was not a wise decision. The relationship ended after production wrapped, but Douglas still considers Tripplehorn a great actress and an extraordinary woman.
"I called her and asked permission. It was her business. She agreed." - Michael Douglas on revealing his relationship with Jeanne Tripplehorn.
Douglas also reveals his love affair with Kathleen Turner during the filming of Romancing the Stone (1984). Turner, now 72 years old, responded casually. "Goodness, such a fuss over something from 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I can't wait to read the book," she told People.
The revelations in this memoir highlight another side of the Hollywood industry: how personal relationships often form behind the scenes, hidden behind the public spotlight. For Indonesia, such stories may rarely come to light, but the phenomenon of secret relationships on set also occurs frequently in the country's entertainment world, though it is seldom public consumption. This shows that the dynamics of the film industry are not only about acting, but also complex human interactions.
Looking ahead, will such revelations become a trend among senior celebrities? Or on the contrary, will more of them choose silence for the sake of privacy? Either way, Douglas's memoir has opened a Pandora's box about the private lives of Hollywood stars, and the public seems forever hungry for stories from behind the camera.
