President Prabowo Subianto awarded the Bintang Mahaputera Adipurna to three leading figures in national defense: Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, former Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, and TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto. The conferral of the honorary decoration took place on the sidelines of the ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of the TNI at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Monday (5/10).
The legal basis for the award is set out in Presidential Decree No.87/TK/2026, read out by the President's Military Secretary, Maj. Gen. Wahyu Y. Besides the Bintang Mahaputera Adipurna, the President also awarded the Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana to TNI Deputy Commander General Tandyo Budi Revita and the three service chiefs of staff: Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal M. Tonny Harjono.
The TNI anniversary this time was not merely ceremonial. A number of new units were inaugurated, reflecting an acceleration in military force development across the three services. From the Army, there are 6 Regional Military Commands (Kodam), 30 Territorial Development Infantry Brigades (Brigif TP), 150 Territorial Development Infantry Battalions (Yonif TP), and 3 Combat Support Battalions (Yon Banpur) covering Cavalry, Field Artillery, and Air Defense Artillery. The Navy added 1 Marine Infantry Brigade and 4 Marine Battalions. Meanwhile, the Air Force formed 1 Division II Korpasgat, 1 Korpasgat Brigade, 3 Korpasgat Battalions, 1 Training Squadron, 2 Air Squadrons, and 2 Radar Units.
This step shows the direction of defense policy, which focuses not only on adding personnel but also on strengthening the territorial structure and air operations capability. The addition of Kodam and Brigif TP, for instance, can be read as an effort to strengthen the state's presence in strategic areas, especially in border regions and vulnerable zones. Meanwhile, the formation of air squadrons and radar units implies a priority on surveillance of national airspace.
"The conferral of this honorary decoration is a form of state appreciation for dedication and real contributions in safeguarding sovereignty," said a Palace official who declined to be named.
In the context of national politics, the awards to Sjafrie and Djamari—two figures who were once in the inner circle of power—underscore the consolidation of the defense elite under the Prabowo administration. Sjafrie, who now serves as Defense Minister, is a trusted figure of the President in the defense sector. Meanwhile, Djamari, although no longer serving as Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, still receives recognition for his services. This can be interpreted as a signal of stability and policy continuity within the TNI.
The 81st TNI anniversary ceremony itself was led directly by Prabowo as inspector of the ceremony, with Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto, Commander of the Joint Regional Command III, acting as ceremony commander. The presence of the head of state among the military ranks underlines the TNI's position as a central institution in Indonesia's defense architecture.
Going forward, the public will watch how these new units are operated, including the readiness of budgets, defense equipment, and human resources. The formation of dozens of units in a single momentum certainly demands no small fiscal and logistical consequences. Will this organizational expansion be matched by a proportional improvement in soldiers' welfare and modernization of defense equipment? Time will test that commitment.
