Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto chose an unusual land route when attending the peak of the 81st anniversary of the TNI at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Monday (5/10/2026). After landing by helicopter, the head of state immediately switched to the domestically produced tactical vehicle, Maung, to head to the ceremony arena. The moment was not only a protocol highlight but also a strong signal regarding the direction of defense equipment modernization and the strengthening of the national defense structure.
Prabowo appeared in a gray suit, blue tie, black peci, and sunglasses. From atop the Maung, he briefly stood to greet the people crowding the area around TNI Headquarters. The arrival of Indonesia's number one figure was welcomed directly by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto. Gibran himself arrived earlier in a white Maung Garuda MV3 Limousine, showing the use of the same tactical vehicle as part of symbolizing the independence of the defense industry.
The presence of two former Presidents, Joko Widodo and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, seated next to each other added political weight to the event. On the field, Prabowo acted as Inspector of the Ceremony. The position of Ceremony Commander was entrusted to Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto, while Air Marshal Deny Muis was appointed as Deputy Ceremony Commander. The Parade Ceremony carried the theme 'TNI Kuat Bersama Rakyat, Indonesia Berdaulat Adil dan Makmur', involving 3,378 combined personnel from the TNI and non-TNI as well as 38 units of defense equipment on display.
However, the main highlight of this year's celebration was not merely the troop parade. Prabowo is scheduled to inaugurate and confirm a number of new units spread across various branches. From the Indonesian Army, there are 6 Regional Military Commands (Kodam), 30 Territorial Infantry Brigades (Brigif TP), 150 Territorial Infantry Battalions (Yonif TP), as well as 3 Support Battalions (Banpur) covering Cavalry, Armed, and Arhanud. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Navy will inaugurate 1 Marine Infantry Brigade and 4 Marine Battalions. The formation of these units marks the largest expansion of the military organization in recent years.
This step raises strategic questions about the direction of Indonesia's defense policy. The massive addition of Kodam and territorial battalions indicates a shift in focus toward strengthening land and territorial defense. Although aimed at increasing sovereignty and security, this structural expansion certainly has implications for budget needs, personnel recruitment, and the provision of supporting infrastructure. The public awaits an explanation regarding the financing scheme and operational targets of these new units.
"This ceremony is not merely ceremonial, but an affirmation of the government's commitment to strengthening the foundation of a modern and professional national defense," said a senior TNI official in a separate statement.
With the formation of dozens of new units, the question ahead is how quickly integration and training can be carried out so that operational readiness is achieved. Will this expansion be followed by an increase in soldier welfare and comprehensive modernization of defense equipment, or will it instead create a new fiscal burden amid global economic uncertainty? The public will scrutinize concrete steps after the ceremony ends.
