Takaaki Nakagami's hope of saying goodbye to the fans at his home race ended in tragedy. The Japanese rider crashed just a few corners after starting the Japanese MotoGP free practice session at Motegi Circuit on Friday (3/10), and suffered a broken left collarbone that requires surgery. The injury not only shattered an emotional moment for Nakagami, but also dealt a serious blow to Honda, which is preparing its 2027 MotoGP prototype.
The incident occurred when Nakagami went through the corner before the circuit tunnel on a track made wet by earlier rain. He was thrown from his bike and landed hard on his left shoulder. The HRC team later confirmed that the 33-year-old rider would undergo surgery and need about four to five weeks of recovery. "Taka was very unlucky. He will need four or five weeks to recover, as long as the surgery goes well," said HRC Team Manager Alberto Puig on Saturday (4/10).
Although a broken collarbone is often considered a minor injury—for example, Maximo Quiles was able to win in Moto3 Aragon a day after surgery—Nakagami's case is far more complex. The rider, who retired at the end of 2024, has been the backbone of Honda's development, especially for the 850cc bike that will be used next season. He was scheduled to carry out crucial testing at Sepang next week, but that plan fell apart instantly.
For Honda, Nakagami's injury worsens the test-rider crisis that has been ongoing since April. Aleix Espargaro, another key test rider, suffered a serious back injury and only returned to riding a MotoGP bike two weeks ago in a private test at Mugello. Espargaro had even considered racing in Japan to replace Joan Mir, who is still recovering, but medical advice ruled it out. Honda was then forced to call up Somkiat Chantra from WorldSBK, but the Thai rider cannot appear in Mandalika next week because his schedule clashes with WorldSBK Estoril. As a result, Espargaro must fly to Lombok and split his time between racing and developing the new bike.
"This is a big blow on all fronts, especially because the championship is now entering a crucial period in which the new bike must be finalized soon," Motorsport.com wrote in its report.
The Indonesian context is relevant because Mandalika will witness the direct impact of Nakagami's injury. The Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok is scheduled to host the Indonesian Grand Prix on 10-12 October. Honda will field Espargaro as a replacement, but he is not yet fully fit after back surgery. This could affect Honda's performance in front of Indonesian fans, who are known for their enthusiasm. Moreover, the disruption to Honda's testing schedule at Sepang—which was supposed to take place next week—could harm the development of the 2027 bike that will race next season. If Honda fails to prepare a competitive bike, it is not impossible that they will again fall far behind rivals such as Ducati, Aprilia, and KTM.
Going forward, Honda must quickly find a solution to fill the test-rider gap. Espargaro is experienced, but he is no longer young and has just recovered from a serious injury. Meanwhile, Nakagami still has to undergo surgery and rehabilitation. If his recovery takes more than a month, Honda could lose valuable time to perfect the RC214V before the 2027 season begins. Will Honda be able to rise from this slump, or will it sink even further into the midfield? Time will tell, but the pressure is mounting.
