Indonesia national team striker Mitchell Baker scored five goals in a 9-2 win over Bangladesh in the final Group A match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Thursday (1/10/2026). The brilliant performance of the 19-year-old not only sent Indonesia to the final but also placed him alongside national football legends.
Baker opened the scoring in the 11th minute, then added four more goals in the 20th, 37th, 42nd, and 90+7th minutes. Those five goals saw him match the quintrick record previously set by Waskito, Iswadi Idris, and Soetjipto Soentoro. Waskito scored five goals when Indonesia beat the Philippines 12-0 at the 1972 President Cup in South Korea. Iswadi Idris did the same when Indonesia thrashed Vietnam 9-1 at the 1971 President Cup. Meanwhile, Soetjipto Soentoro scored five goals when Indonesia hammered China Taipei 11-1 at the 1968 Merdeka Tournament.
For Baker, this haul brings his goal tally for the Merah-Putih team to nine goals in seven appearances. That record underlines his position as one of the most prolific strikers in John Herdman's squad. Even so, he refused to be complacent and chose to celebrate the win as the result of collective work.
The win was also down to contributions from other players. Rizky Ridho (32'), Justin Hubner (45+1'), Luke Vickery (90'), and Kevin Diks (90+6') also got on the scoresheet. Bangladesh, coached by Thomas Dooley, could only reply with two goals. The result confirms Indonesia's place in the final, where they will face Thailand at SUGBK on Monday (5/10/2026).
"Yes, this was a crazy match. In my opinion, this is the craziest match I have ever played," Baker said after the game.
Baker stressed that the win was not the end of the fight. He is aware there is still one crucial match to win to lift Indonesia's first trophy. "We will enjoy tonight, but there is still a final to play. We have to refocus quickly to win the first trophy for Indonesia. That is my focus now," he concluded.
For Indonesian football fans, Baker's performance is a breath of fresh air amid the need for a sharp striker at senior level. His consistency at the ASEAN Cup 2026 could be valuable capital against Thailand, who are known for a disciplined back line. The question is, can Baker repeat his sharpness in the final and lead Indonesia to the title?
