- Meski lebih sering menjadi pengganti, pemain berusia 23 tahun itu tercatat selalu tampil dalam delapan laga terakhir Singapura di bawah pelatih Gavin Lee, menandakan perannya kian vital.

Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium will be the opening stage of Group A of the Premier Division FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 when Indonesia host Singapore on Friday (25/9/2026) at 20.00 WIB. Behind the hosts' preparations, one name from the visiting camp has caught the eye: Farhan Zulkifli, a young midfielder ready to be the surprise.
Farhan is not merely a squad filler in Gavin Lee's side. Since his debut on 3 January 2023, he has collected 17 caps and one goal for Singapore. However, his role has been limited at times—only twice a starter in nine international matches throughout 2026. His flexibility as a left winger or attacking midfielder has often made him a backup option, including behind Song Ui-yong.
Even so, Farhan's contribution cannot be overlooked. In the 4-0 friendly win over Mongolia in May, his cross from the left produced an assist for Song Ui-young's goal. Then, in the second leg of the 2026 AFF Cup semifinal against Thailand in August, his aggressive dribbling forced the Thai goalkeeper into a save, which led to Harhys Stewart's long-range goal. Those moments showed that the 23-year-old is capable of changing the course of a match, even from the bench.
Coach Gavin Lee recognises the importance of Farhan's role. He believes every player has a unique contribution, and Farhan is the type who puts the team's interests first. "Every match requires a different solution, and we consider the context before deciding the starting eleven," Lee said, as quoted from his statement. This statement underlines that Farhan can be an ace card played according to the needs of the match.
"Opportunities don't come often. When they arrive, we have to welcome them with open arms. It doesn't matter whether I start or come off the bench, what matters is that I can make a positive impact in the form of a win," Farhan said when met at Hotel Mulia Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (23/9/2026).
For Indonesia, Farhan's presence as a threat from the bench is a warning in itself. The team under their new coach must be wary of the change of rhythm he can bring. Moreover, Singapore arrive with positive momentum after an impressive performance at the 2026 AFF Cup. The win over Mongolia and the competitive display against Thailand show that Singapore's young squad cannot be underestimated.
Indonesia's context: as hosts, Indonesia are demanded to get the maximum result in the opening match. Supporter backing at GBK can be a double-edged sword—lifting spirits, but also adding pressure. A defeat to Singapore would damage momentum and complicate their path in the rest of the tournament. Conversely, a win would be valuable capital for facing Vietnam and Thailand, who are also favoured.
After facing Indonesia, Singapore will meet Bangladesh at GBK on 28 September, then travel to Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, to face Malaysia on 1 October 2026. This tight schedule demands smart rotation from Gavin Lee, and Farhan could be the key to maintaining the intensity of play.
The big question: will Farhan start or return as a super-sub? What is clear is that he has proven that minutes on the pitch do not always determine impact. In front of tens of thousands of Indonesian supporters, Farhan Zulkifli is ready to change the narrative—from a backup player to a surprise hero.
