Timnas Indonesia will begin its campaign in Group A of Division 1 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 against Singapore at Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Friday (25/9/2026). The match marks the start of the inaugural edition of the tournament, which splits participants into two tiers, with Group B comprising Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Pakistan.
Among the six Division 1 contestants, the Garuda squad is recorded as the team with the youngest player composition. The average age of the 23 players called up by John Herdman reaches 26.7 years, lower than the Philippines (27.1), Vietnam (27.2), Thailand (27.9), Malaysia (28.3), and Singapore (29.4).
The figure underscores the development direction taken by Herdman. Of the 23 players, only three are over 30: Thom Haye (31), Joey Pelupessy (33), and Jordi Amat (34). Sandy Walsh (31) should have completed the list but is absent due to injury. That means the other 20 players are in their productive and golden phase.
This policy is not new. In the third round of 2026 World Cup qualification under Shin Tae-yong, the team's average age briefly reached 25.5 years. That figure held when Patrick Kluivert took over, before rising to 27.1 years in the fourth round. Now, in the regional tournament, Herdman has again lowered the average age, reinforcing his commitment to regeneration.
"We want to build a long-term foundation. Young players must get playing minutes at the international level," said John Herdman in a press conference session ahead of the match, as quoted from an official PSSI statement.
One name that has caught attention is Mitchell Baker. The 19-year-old striker who plays for Georgetown Hoyas was recalled after an impressive showing at the 2026 AFF Cup, scoring four goals in four group-stage matches. His 1.96-meter frame and goal instinct are expected to make him an ideal tandem for Ole Romeny up front.
Baker's presence also breaks the youngest-player record previously held by Marselino Ferdinan and Hokky Caraka (20 years). Marselino, who was just announced as a Persija Jakarta recruit for the BRI Super League 2026/2027, is absent due to injury.
For Indonesia, this strategy is not merely about numbers. A young average age can potentially provide an advantage in terms of intensity and speed, especially in a tournament with a packed schedule. However, experience remains a gamble, especially when facing teams like Thailand or Vietnam that are known for disciplined play.
On the other hand, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is a proving ground for Herdman. He is required not only to achieve results but also to prepare a generation of players for 2030 World Cup qualification. The Indonesian public certainly hopes this regeneration bears achievement, not just talk.
The question is, can this young squad maintain consistency throughout the tournament? The answer will be visible starting Friday night at SUGBK.
