The film Casino Royale (2006) will return to cinemas worldwide in October 2026, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of its first release. Amazon MGM Studios announced the news through a new poster featuring Daniel Craig as James Bond seated at a poker table while reaching for a pistol. The move comes as the studio prepares to reboot the franchise with a 26th film to be directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The rerelease is a significant moment for Bond fans who have been awaiting a new direction for the franchise since Daniel Craig retired from the iconic role after No Time to Die (2021). Although no replacement actor has been announced, the return of Casino Royale to the big screen offers a chance to revisit one of the most influential films in the history of the Bond series. The film is regarded as a turning point that brought a darker, more realistic approach, while introducing Craig as the new face of 007.
For the global film industry, rereleases of classic films are increasingly a strategy to generate additional revenue and keep franchises relevant between new releases. Casino Royale itself holds a special place because it successfully rebooted a series that had been seen as stagnant, with an approach more focused on character and practical action. The film's success also elevated Craig's name as one of the most memorable Bond actors.
In Indonesia, devoted James Bond fans are likely to welcome the news. Although there has been no official confirmation regarding a release schedule in Indonesian cinemas, global release patterns are usually followed by local cinema chains within a few weeks. The potential upside for cinemas is also open, especially if the rerelease is packaged with special promotions or other Bond film marathon events.
"To celebrate the 20th anniversary, CASINO ROYALE returns to the big screen worldwide," the official James Bond account wrote on Twitter on 15 September 2026.
Before the 2006 version, the novel Casino Royale had been adapted for the screen several times, including a 1954 television episode featuring Barry Nelson as an American version of Bond, as well as a 1967 parody film starring David Niven. However, it was the Craig version that proved the most successful critically and commercially, while setting a new standard for modern spy films.
With the reboot in development, the rerelease can be seen as a bridge between the Craig era and Bond's future. The question is whether Indonesian audiences will be given the chance to enjoy Casino Royale in local cinemas, and how strong market enthusiasm will be for a two-decade-old film. Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Bond is not finished.
