Wardogs developer Bulkhead has announced a controversial strategy to fix game balance: offering in-game cash and XP bonuses to players willing to join the Blue team. The policy will apply exclusively in Season 2, scheduled for release on 15 October. The move follows internal data showing that the Blue team consistently records the lowest win rate compared with the Green and Red teams.
Since launch, many players have avoided the Blue team because of its poor reputation. They are even willing to wait several minutes on the team selection screen just to secure a slot on the Green or Red team. According to Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer in the "Road to Season 2" devlog, the studio is looking for ways to raise the win rate of a certain team. "We're looking at how we can help the win rate of a certain team," he said, as quoted from the developer's official channel.
The problem is not just perception. The Blue team faces technical hurdles such as less effective camouflage and disadvantageous spawn points. Season 2 will introduce a new spawn in Bakurani to address some of those issues. However, the economic and XP incentives are expected to break the psychological cycle that leaves the Blue team short of experienced players. Previously, community analysis called the phenomenon a self-fulfilling prophecy: players hear the bad reputation, avoid the team, and the Blue team ends up filled with newcomers.
Though it may seem drastic, the incentive is seen as having the potential to change the competitive landscape. The size of the bonus has not been disclosed, but it is expected to make the Blue team an immediately popular choice. On the other hand, some observers argue the problem may already be resolving itself naturally. In recent weeks, bias against the Blue team has begun to decline; the faction still often loses on the NA West server, but it has started scoring points and competing more closely.
"We want to make sure all teams have an equal chance, and this incentive is one way to speed up balance," Brammer said in the devlog.
For the global game industry, Bulkhead's move reflects an increasingly common trend: developers using micro-economic incentives to steer player behavior. The approach resembles a battle pass system or daily login bonuses, but is more targeted at the team balance problem. Its success will depend on how large the bonus is and whether veteran players actually return to the Blue team.
In Indonesia, the Wardogs community has also shown enthusiasm for Season 2. Although there is no official data on player distribution on Southeast Asian servers, discussions on forums and social media show hope that the update will bring significant change. The progression reset is a particular concern, since players must start from scratch. However, many see it as a chance to refresh the meta and bring back old players.
Looking ahead, the question is whether the incentive will create long-term dependency or instead encourage organic balance. If it works, Bulkhead may apply a similar strategy in the next season. If not, it will need to find other solutions to address the team's entrenched stigma. Season 2 will be a test of the developer's ability to manage complex community dynamics.
