Oxford United officially announced that Marselino Ferdinan is no longer part of the club, after his contract expired in the summer of 2026. The Indonesia national team midfielder will now join Persija Jakarta on a free transfer. The decision marks the end of Marselino's two-year spell at the English third-tier club, which was largely defined by injuries and limited playing time.
In a statement on the club's official website, Oxford United said Marselino left after his contract expired, and the club continued to give him full support throughout his injury recovery. "Oxford United confirms that Marselino Ferdinan has left the club and joined Indonesian Super League club, Persija Jakarta," the Oxford management wrote. They also noted that the 22-year-old spent part of his final season on loan at AS Trencin in Slovakia.
During his time with Oxford, Marselino recorded only two competitive appearances for a total of 14 minutes on the pitch. The lack of playing time was inseparable from a string of injuries that plagued him. In late December 2025, he had to undergo hamstring surgery, and in mid-August 2026 he returned to the operating table due to a muscle problem he suffered during an Indonesia national team training camp. To date, he is still in the recovery phase and it is not yet certain when he will return to action.
The move brings fresh hope for Persija Jakarta, which is building its squad for the domestic competition. With his free-agent status, Macan Kemayoran gets a young national-team player without having to pay a fee. However, the biggest challenge remains Marselino's physical condition. If he can recover fully, his presence could be an attacking engine and a magnet for supporters. Conversely, if injuries continue to haunt him, this move could be a big gamble for both sides.
"Everyone at Oxford United thanks Marselino for his time at the club and wishes him the best for his career in the future," read the official Oxford United statement.
For the Indonesia national team, Marselino's return to Liga 1 could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, he will be easier for the coaching staff to monitor and will get regular playing time if fit. On the other hand, the domestic competition is often considered not yet on par with Europe, so his international exposure could decline. National team coach Shin Tae-yong previously stressed that players who regularly play at their clubs will be prioritized. Therefore, Marselino's fitness is the key to strengthening Garuda again.
From an industry perspective, this transfer also reflects the dynamics of the Indonesian player market. European clubs are now more cautious about signing injury-prone Asian players, while domestic clubs are starting to be bold in taking in young talent to strengthen the league. Persija, as one of the big clubs, has adequate medical facilities and a capable coaching team to help Marselino's recovery. If successful, this could become a blueprint for other clubs in managing injured players.
Going forward, the Indonesian football public is waiting to see whether Marselino can prove his quality at the domestic level. With two surgeries in eight months, the big question is not only technical, but also mental and physical resilience. Can he rise and become a star in Liga 1, or will injuries again hamper his career? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: this move is a turning point in Marselino Ferdinan's career.
