Indonesia national team midfielder Marselino Ferdinan has decided to end his three-year spell in Europe and return home to strengthen Persija Jakarta. The 22-year-old signed a two-season contract, with an extension option, after tough negotiations over the past few weeks.
Marselino made the decision after weighing various factors, especially his desire to bounce back from a difficult period on the blue continent. While wearing the shirts of European clubs, he spent more time in the treatment room due to hamstring and muscle injuries, leaving him with very few minutes on the pitch. Persija is seen as the right place to recover his form and sharpen his edge again.
"I was looking for a team that is truly serious and can maximize my potential. Right now my focus is on regaining my form and fitness. Persija is the best choice going forward," Marselino said in an official club statement.
Shin Tae-yong's presence in the coaching seat was a magnet of its own for Marselino. He said he has a good relationship with the South Korean coach, who previously gave him great trust in the Indonesia national team. The collaboration is expected to restore Marselino's best form, having once been a mainstay of the Garuda midfield in various international competitions.
Even so, Marselino cannot immediately contribute on the pitch. He is still undergoing rehabilitation after muscle surgery in mid-August 2026. Previously, at the end of December 2025, he also had to go under the knife to heal a hamstring injury. This condition means the Persija management must be patient until the player is fully recovered and ready to compete.
Strategically, Marselino's arrival gives Persija's midfield a new option. With the No. 10 shirt attached to him, he is projected as the midfield general who sets the rhythm of the attack. The combination of international experience and his playing vision is expected to boost the firepower of the Macan Kemayoran, who last season often struggled to break through opponents' defenses.
"With the current squad and coaching setup, we are optimistic about winning the title. I will always give my best and hope we can be champions together this year," Marselino asserted.
Marselino's return to Indonesia also marks a new trend for the country's young footballers. After trying their luck in Europe, many players are choosing to return to the domestic competition to get regular minutes. The move is seen as positive for strengthening the national league, while also setting an example that a career at home remains promising.
For Persija, the investment in Marselino is not without risk. His recurring injuries are a note in themselves. However, the management believes that with the right medical facilities and recovery program, the player born in Jakarta on 9 September 2004 can return to peak form. The two-year contract gives both sides room to prove themselves to each other.
Going forward, Indonesian football fans are waiting to see when Marselino will return to the pitch. If he can overcome his fitness issues, his partnership with senior players in Persija's midfield could become one of the most feared forces in the BRI Super League 2026/2027. Will Marselino prove that his return is the right step to shine again? Only time will tell, but high expectations already accompany him.
