Persija Sign Marselino Ferdinan at Transfer Deadline on Two-Year Contract

Persija Jakarta secured the signature of Marselino Ferdinan on the final day of player registration for the 2026/2027 BRI Super League, Wednesday (23/9/2026). The 22-year-old midfielder has been signed to a two-season contract, marking his return to the domestic competition after three years playing in Europe.

The move was the closing maneuver for Macan Kemayoran in the early-season transfer market. The capital club had previously made several signings, but Marselino's arrival was seen as the most serious signal that Persija was not merely completing its squad, but building an attacking foundation for a title chase.

The decision also closes a less-than-ideal period in Marselino's overseas career. At Oxford United, he recorded only two appearances for a total of 14 minutes over two years. Persija manager Ardhi Tjahjoko did not hide his high hopes for his new recruit. According to him, Marselino's quality has already been proven at international level and he only needs time to return to his best condition.

"We hope his injury can recover as soon as possible and Marselino can join the team soon. We all know Marselino's ability is extraordinary," said Ardhi. "We believe that with the qualities he possesses, he can contribute greatly to Persija for the rest of this season."

For Persija, signing a player who is still recovering is not without risk. However, management seems to have calculated that Marselino's long-term value far outweighs the short-term uncertainty. His young age, experience in Europe, and status as a core part of the Indonesia national team make him a strategic asset, both on and off the pitch.

From the player's perspective, this return can be read as an effort to rebuild momentum. During his time in Belgium with KMSK Deinze and later in England, Marselino rarely earned the trust to play regularly. The domestic competition offers a more familiar stage, where he once caught attention with Persebaya Surabaya with 34 appearances, seven goals, and nine assists before moving in early 2023.

Another factor that cannot be ignored is the reunion with Shin Tae-yong. The South Korean coach was the figure who gave Marselino his first call-up to the Indonesia national team four years ago. This closeness could accelerate his adaptation, especially because Shin Tae-yong fully understands his playing characteristics and needs.
