Gibran Performs Friday Prayers in Solok, a Symbol of Post-Disaster Recovery Under Test

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka performed Friday prayers at Masjid Raya Al Mukarramah, Koto Gaek Guguak, Gunung Talang District, Solok Regency, West Sumatra, on Friday (25/9/2026). He came not as an official on a formal visit, but to mingle directly with residents who had just been hit by flash floods. After prayers, Gibran sat cross-legged on the mosque terrace, having lunch with victims, accompanied by National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto and several regional officials.

The moment was not merely a symbolic visit. Amid a disaster that has taken homes and access to basic services, the presence of Indonesia's number two official signals that the government places social and religious recovery as an inseparable part of the post-disaster agenda. Gibran stressed that residents' safety, fulfillment of basic needs, and restoration of daily activities are priorities. "The government will pay attention to the needs of affected residents in performing their worship," he said.

The statement implies that houses of worship are not viewed as secondary buildings, but as nodes of psychological and social recovery. In many disasters in Indonesia, mosques, churches, or temples are often the first point where people gather again, exchange information, and organize aid. Restoring this function is as important as repairing damaged roads or bridges.

While in Solok, Gibran also inspected several critical points: a hospital, damaged residents' homes, evacuation posts, and affected infrastructure. This series of visits shows that the government is trying to map real needs on the ground, not just rely on written reports. For the public, the presence of high officials often signals that the area is not forgotten in the national response queue.

However, such visits always leave a crucial question: how quickly will recovery promises be realized? Hydrometeorological disasters like the flash flood in Solok are not isolated events. Extreme rainfall intensity, changes in land use, and limited drainage capacity mean similar risks continue to haunt several areas. Restoring houses of worship and social infrastructure must go hand in hand with long-term mitigation, including spatial planning and early warning systems.

From a governance perspective, Gibran's visit also tests the effectiveness of coordination between the central government, BNPB, provincial, and regency governments. In many cases, emergency aid flows heavily at the start, but medium-term recovery often stalls due to limited regional budgets and overlapping authority. If not managed well, residents can be trapped in prolonged uncertainty.

For businesses and investors in West Sumatra, post-disaster stability is a prerequisite for maintaining the investment climate. Infrastructure damage can disrupt supply chains, especially for agricultural and plantation commodities that are the backbone of the regional economy. Rapid and coordinated recovery will minimize local economic shocks, while maintaining market confidence in the government's ability to handle crises.

Going forward, the public will scrutinize whether the commitment made on the mosque terrace bears real fruit. Will houses of worship and residents' homes be rehabilitated before the next rainy season? And more fundamentally, will the government strengthen mitigation policies so that a similar tragedy does not recur in Solok or other areas? Without measurable preventive steps, a sympathetic visit will only be a brief note in an endless cycle of disasters.
