Veteran British director Mike Leigh has revealed that his latest film, Tender Loving Care, will most likely be the final project in a career spanning more than 50 years. Leigh made the announcement at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain while promoting the film. Declining health is the main reason behind the decision.
Leigh, now 83, has been diagnosed with myositis, an autoimmune disease that causes muscle inflammation and weakens motor function. In an interview session with journalists, he explained that the condition limits his mobility, making directing increasingly difficult. "It's purely a practical matter related to my medical condition—a physical condition," he said. He added that it is very possible this film will be his last.
Tender Loving Care itself is a comedy drama starring Kate O'Flynn, Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson, and Alice Bailey Johnson. The film highlights Britain's post-World War II decline and the impact of budget cuts on health and social services. Leigh stressed that his work is not romantic escapism, but a stark portrait of reality that still upholds the value of compassion. "We haven't stopped being human. Quality of life doesn't disappear just because we face hard times—on the contrary, we need to reflect on positive things," he said.
In the interview, Leigh also shared his views on Britain's future. He admitted to having mixed feelings—somewhere between optimism and pessimism. "I want to see light at the end of the tunnel. I have children and grandchildren, and my youngest grandchild is just two years old. If all goes as it should, he will be my age in the 22nd century, and I want that world to be a good world," he said. However, he did not deny that much of what is happening in the world today makes it hard for him to stay optimistic.
Leigh also touched on the many wine-drinking scenes in the film. According to him, alcohol is part of the texture of everyday life and not a comment on whether drinking is good or bad. "It's about making a film about how we live at all levels of real life. Part of that is people drinking, so there is a kind of symbolism in it," he explained.

Leigh's decision to retire marks the end of an era for a filmmaker known for his unique approach to portraying the working class and social issues. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Lion in Venice. Films such as Secrets & Lies and Another Year have left a deep mark on world cinema.
For Indonesian audiences, Leigh's works may not be as popular as Hollywood films, but for independent film fans and critics, he is an inspiring figure. His films are often discussed for their social realism and humanism. His departure from directing certainly leaves a gap that is hard to fill, especially in an industry increasingly dominated by big franchises and visual effects.
Even so, Leigh's legacy will live on through his enduring works. The question is, who will carry on the tradition of realist cinema he pioneered? Will a new generation of filmmakers be able to keep alive the spirit of social critique and empathy that is Leigh's hallmark? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Mike Leigh has made an invaluable contribution to the world of film.
