Meryl Streep to Voice Aslan in Narnia, US Conservatives Furious

Meryl Streep will voice Aslan, the wise lion of the Narnia world, in the film adaptation of The Magician's Nephew directed by Greta Gerwig. The confirmation has sparked anger among a number of American evangelical commentators who view the decision as a desecration of a symbol of Christ.

News of Streep's casting first surfaced in April last year, but was only confirmed this week after Empire magazine released a first look at the film and an interview with Gerwig. The director of Barbie explained that she needed an actor over 70 who could convey wisdom as well as a childlike sense of wonder. "I wanted someone who is profound but not pretentious, who has authority but is not dour," Gerwig said, adding that the list of actors with those qualities is very short.

Several conservative figures reacted immediately. Radio host Jenna Ellis accused Gerwig of "desecrating Christ with divine femininity", while Texas pastor David Fairchild called Streep's casting "creative vandalism". Isabel Brown of The Daily Wire asserted that C.S. Lewis explicitly intended Aslan as an incarnation of Christ in the Narnia world, and regarded Streep's voice as a "deliberate mockery of Christianity".

Not all Christians agree, however. Writer Mary Pezzulo highlighted the irony behind the protests: evangelical groups accept the depiction of Christ as a wild animal, but reject it when the voice given is a woman's. "They treat the depiction of Christ as a lion—a carnivorous animal whose urine reeks and who sleeps 23 hours a day—as sacred art, but a woman's voice is considered sacrilege," she wrote.

Gerwig has not confirmed whether her version of Aslan is actually depicted as a lioness. What is clear is that she plans to reinterpret Narnia through the prism of rock opera: Aslan's eyes are given different colors like David Bowie's, and the creation of Narnia is designed to sound like Genesis performed by the Spiders from Mars. Daniel Craig plays the magician in the title, while Emma Mackey replaces Tilda Swinton as the White Witch, Jadis.

Regardless of the debate, The Magician's Nephew actually has a rich plot: two children discover a forest containing pools that connect various worlds, one of which takes them to a dead city beneath a dying sun, where they awaken a queen who has wiped out its entire population and accidentally bring her to London. The book offers wild magic, unlike the slower and more didactic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

For the film industry, this controversy could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, the huge public attention could potentially repeat the success of Barbie, which turned from a toy film into a cultural phenomenon. On the other hand, a boycott from conservative groups in the United States could affect box office revenue, especially in regions with a strong evangelical base.

In Indonesia, where Hollywood films dominate cinema screens and the digital market, controversies like this usually do not immediately reduce audience interest. However, religiously sensitive issues can trigger reactions from certain mass organizations, especially if they are seen as insulting religious symbols. Local distributors need to consider a careful communication strategy, including the possibility of censorship or promotional adjustments.

What is certain is that Streep—whose voice has not yet been heard in any film footage—has stolen more attention than the White Witch herself. Is this the beginning of a new chapter for a successful Narnia franchise, or a controversy that obscures the film's quality? Time will tell, but one thing is clear: the debate over who has the right to voice Aslan has only just begun.
