Mac mini M6: AI Performance Gets Fiercer, Friendly Price Becomes a Memory

Apple has once again refreshed its most affordable desktop computer line, the Mac mini, by embedding the M6 chip. The move underscores the company's ambition to make the device a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) computing on the desk, as locally run AI models grow more popular.
In terms of design, there are no significant changes. The aluminum casing still carries two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, plus three Thunderbolt 4 ports and HDMI on the back. Support for up to three external monitors is also retained. The main change lies in the heart of the device: the M6 chip, which is claimed to have more processing cores, be more power-efficient, and transfer memory data faster.
In various benchmark tests such as Geekbench and Cinebench, the Mac mini M6 consistently outperforms its predecessor, the M4, by a fairly significant margin. Although benchmark numbers do not always reflect real-world performance, the results give a picture of its technical potential. In specific applications, such as 4K video export, the time required is slightly shorter than the M4 model. The device is also claimed to handle image and video editing smoothly, including Apple's newer AI features such as a smarter Siri.
However, for everyday users, the performance improvement over the M4 may not be very noticeable. The bigger leap is felt when compared with older chip generations, especially the M1. That means for those still using a Mac mini M1, upgrading to the M6 will deliver a more tangible difference.
The most striking thing about this launch is not the specifications, but the price. Two years ago, the Mac mini M4 launched at a starting price of $599 and immediately became sought after for its outstanding price-to-performance ratio. Now, that price has jumped to $899 for the base model. The increase is tied to soaring global memory chip costs, driven by the massive expansion of AI data centers worldwide.
The entire electronics industry is feeling the impact. Memory component makers are raising prices due to high demand from the AI sector, and Apple is not immune. Even so, the Mac mini M6's price is still reasonable for a powerful computer with a long service life. The catch is that its appeal as the "cheapest entry point" into the Apple ecosystem is now fading.
"The memory market is hot because of AI, and that hits every device maker. Apple chose to raise prices rather than cut specifications," said an industry analyst who did not wish to be named.
For consumers in Indonesia, this price increase deserves attention. At the current exchange rate, the base Mac mini M6 is equivalent to Rp14 million, while the mid-tier variant can reach Rp17 million. Those prices do not include taxes and shipping costs if bought from abroad. Even so, for content creators, AI developers, or professionals who need a compact device with high performance, the Mac mini M6 still offers its own value, especially because it can run AI models locally without relying on the cloud.
The Indonesian market itself shows growing interest in Apple devices, especially among creative workers and technology startups. However, with prices rising, prospective buyers may compare it with alternatives such as custom-built PCs or Windows laptops that offer similar specifications at lower prices. On the other hand, Apple's integrated ecosystem and long-term support are often the deciding factors.
Looking ahead, the question is whether the surge in memory component prices will continue or ease. If the AI trend keeps rising, it is not impossible that hardware prices such as the Mac mini will keep climbing. Apple appears to be testing how deep its users' loyalty runs, while still trying to deliver devices that remain relevant in the AI era. Will the Mac mini M6 remain a favorite choice, or will it become a victim of AI's own success?
