Konami is celebrating four decades of the Castlevania franchise by releasing an original game for free on Android and iOS, along with major discounts on various collections in the PlayStation Store. The move marks the Japanese company's effort to revive one of the most influential legacies in video game history, which was first released in Japan on 26 September 1986 for the Family Computer Disk System.
The original Castlevania game, initially designed for the Nintendo Entertainment System, can now be downloaded at no cost via the Play Store and App Store. The free period runs from 25 September to 24 October 2026, and anyone who downloads it during that window can keep playing it after the promotion ends. This is not merely a marketing gimmick, but a Konami strategy to expand its player base on mobile platforms that have long been dominated by casual games.
In addition to the free game, the PlayStation Store is offering price cuts on four Castlevania collection bundles. The discounts are valid until 8 October 2026, after which prices are expected to return to normal. For die-hard fans, this is a rare chance to get several classic titles for under $5.
Konami's move is not without reason. Throughout its history, the company has released more than 30 Castlevania titles worldwide, and the series became one of the foundations of the Metroidvania genre. By making the first game free, Konami hopes to attract younger players who may never have experienced the challenge of that iconic platformer. On the other hand, the major discounts in the PlayStation Store are a magnet for collectors and veteran gamers looking to complete their digital collections.
"This initiative is our way of celebrating the Castlevania legacy and thanking our loyal fans," a Konami representative said in an official statement.
For the Indonesian market, this promotion could boost the number of local players, especially since the free mobile game can be accessed without significant barriers. Although prices in the PlayStation Store are listed in US dollars, many Indonesian gamers are used to transacting in regional digital stores. The discounts could also serve as an entry point for a new generation to discover the legendary series often called the ancestor of modern action-platformer games.
Looking ahead, the question is whether Konami will announce a new Castlevania title after this celebration, or simply rely on nostalgia alone. If the market response is positive, it is not impossible that the company will deliver a remake or sequel that fans have long awaited.
