The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has undertaken a massive overhaul of the Malaysian National Team squad, cutting 22 players from the 2026 AFF Cup lineup and adding three new naturalized players. This move is considered more aggressive compared to the Indonesian National Team's preparations ahead of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
This overhaul has drawn attention because Malaysia has retained only six players from the squad that reached the semifinals of the 2026 AFF Cup. Coach Tan Cheng Ho is attempting to rebuild the team's strength by incorporating senior players capable of competing in Group A Division 1, where Malaysia will face Indonesia, Singapore, and Bangladesh.
FAM's move is a response to Malaysia's failure to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup, which was marred by a naturalized player document forgery case. Malaysian football observer, Raja Isa Raja Akram Shah, believes that the federation wants to prove itself in this inaugural tournament linked to the FIFA Matchday calendar.
"After Malaysia failed to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup due to the naturalized player document forgery case, they want to prove themselves in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. That's why FAM is very serious about preparing the Malaysian National Team," said Raja Isa.
The three new naturalized players recruited are Bergson da Silva (Brazil), Manuel Hidalgo (Argentina), and Brad Tapp (Australia). The arrival of Bergson and Hidalgo displaces Mohamadou Sumareh, who has been a key player since 2018. Interestingly, all three play for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), bringing the total number of JDT players in the Malaysian squad to eleven.
Raja Isa views the concentration of JDT players as Malaysia's core strength as a strategic policy because player chemistry builds faster. "With the highest number of players, JDT becomes Malaysia's core strength in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. In my opinion, this is a very strategic policy because player chemistry integrates faster," he explained.
Malaysian legend Safiq Rahim sees Bergson da Silva as potentially a new weapon for the Harimau Malaya (Malayan Tigers), especially when facing the Indonesian National Team. Since joining JDT in 2021, the Brazilian-born striker has demonstrated his sharpness in the Malaysian Super League.
Nevertheless, Raja Isa reminded that player quality is not everything. "Football is not just about good players. The most important thing is how these players can unite in a solid game. I believe with Malaysia's current strength, they can compete in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup," he said.
He also highlighted the valuable experience of JDT players who have reached the AFC Champions League Elite. "I believe JDT players with experience at the Asian club level are a good asset for the Malaysian National Team. The Indonesian National Team's squad quality is superior to Malaysia's. But coach John Herdman still needs to build their chemistry, and that takes time. The Indonesian National Team vs. Malaysia derby will be very interesting in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup," he stated.
For Indonesia, the competition in Group A will not only impact prestige but also FIFA rankings. The results of matches in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will affect both countries' positions in the global rankings, which could have implications for future international tournament seeding. The Indonesian National Team, which has also undergone an overhaul by dropping 14 players, needs to quickly find its chemistry, especially since Malaysia appears more prepared with a well-established composition.
With Malaysia's aggressive preparations, will the Indonesian National Team be able to meet the challenge and maintain its dominance in Southeast Asia? The answer will be seen on the field, but one thing is certain: the Indonesia vs. Malaysia clash in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will be a decisive match for the direction of regional football competition.
