Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, the latest RPG from Intelligent Systems, has garnered mixed reactions from players regarding its support conversation system, which is perceived as having fewer interactions compared to previous titles. Some players have complained about the limited number of conversation pairings and the short support chains for several characters. However, behind these complaints lies a design rationale that makes the game more focused and meaningful.
Instead of maintaining the old formula that allowed almost all characters to converse with each other, Intelligent Systems has trimmed conversations deemed to be mere filler. This decision is evident in how characters like Guzran and Catania have no interactions with main party members. Guzran, who enjoys boasting about his experience training youths, only interacts with characters who have a narrative connection, such as Mikaela and her daughter, Mu. Meanwhile, Catania, who survived the Cydonia tragedy, never speaks with Leda, a character also linked to the event.
This approach aligns with modern game design trends that prioritize narrative quality over quantity. Intelligent Systems seemingly aims to ensure that every conversation provides new information about a character, rather than being mere small talk. For instance, the character Goliath sacrifices his drinking habit to buy books for his adopted sibling. This small detail emerges in monthly dialogues and gift interactions, not in lengthy support conversations. This indicates that character development doesn't always require long, formal conversations.
For players in Indonesia, this change could reflect how Japanese game developers are starting to take risks by reducing elements that have become market expectations. Within the Indonesian Fire Emblem community, discussions about support conversations are often a hot topic, especially since many players enjoy the social simulation aspect of the game. However, Intelligent Systems' decision challenges players to appreciate narratives delivered through alternative means, such as environmental dialogue and gift items.
"Support conversations in Fortune's Weave are an example of how Intelligent Systems trimmed unnecessary filler and focused on the most important chats for characters and players," wrote Polygon in its review.
Nevertheless, not all players agree. Some feel that support conversations are one of the main appeals of the Fire Emblem series, as they allow players to build romantic relationships or friendships between characters. By reducing their number, the game is perceived to have lost some of the role-playing elements that make the series unique. However, those who support the change argue that the existing conversations now feel more substantial and less like mere formalities.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see if Intelligent Systems maintains this approach in future installments. If critically and commercially successful, it's not unlikely that other developers will follow suit. Conversely, if player complaints persist, Nintendo might consider reverting to the old formula with a new twist. Regardless, Fortune's Weave has opened a discussion about how narrative games should build character relationships in an era that increasingly values narrative efficiency.
