Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed the background of the "conscious uncoupling" term that went viral in 2014, which originated from her and Chris Martin's determination to remain a family after their divorce. The couple, who married in 2003 and separated in 2014, have two children, Apple (22) and Moses (20).
In an interview on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Paltrow recounted that she and Martin sought ways to prevent their separation from causing prolonged pain for their children. She admitted to asking friends from divorced families about their worst experiences. The answers revealed that the worst part wasn't the separation itself, but the tension that lasted for years afterward. "They said the worst part was seeing parents at odds, never eating at the same table until graduation," Paltrow said, mimicking her friends' stories.
Reflecting on this, Paltrow and Martin decided to consult a therapist. The therapist introduced the concept of conscious uncoupling, which emphasizes a commitment to prioritizing children even after the status as a couple has ended. "We committed to remaining a family even though we were no longer a couple," she explained.
Nevertheless, Paltrow admitted that practicing conscious uncoupling was not always smooth. She recalled a time when she and Martin had to calm themselves on their porch before a weekly brunch with their children. "We looked at each other and said, 'Not now.' Then we hugged, high-fived, and still went to brunch," she recounted.
The impact of the term wasn't limited to their personal lives. Paltrow confessed to once losing a film role due to the controversy it generated. "I was in the middle of a divorce, and then I got fired. It was really fun," she said sarcastically on the Good Hang podcast with Amy Poehler.
"We really sat down and thought, is there a way to do this?" — Gwyneth Paltrow
The conscious uncoupling approach popularized by Paltrow highlights a trend of more mindful divorces among celebrities and the general public. In Indonesia, this concept is becoming relevant as awareness of children's mental health post-divorce increases. However, social stigma and limited access to family counseling services remain challenges.
Moving forward, Paltrow's story can serve as a reflection for couples facing separation: is it possible to end a marriage without destroying family ties? The answer may not be easy, but the effort to remain present as parents seems to be key.
