Persija Jakarta secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Java United in the third week of the BRI Super League 2026/2027 at Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Gianyar, on Saturday (19/9/2026). Despite securing three points, coach Shin Tae-yong believes his squad was unlucky not to add more goals from the numerous chances created.
Acting as the home team, Persija had to play in Gianyar due to a Disciplinary Committee sanction. Nevertheless, the Kemayoran Tigers (Persija's nickname) dominated with 59 percent possession. They unleashed ten shots, six of which were on target, while Java United recorded nine shots with four on target. Persija's sole goal was scored by Arlyansyah Abdulmanan in the 13th minute after receiving an assist from Kerim Memija.
In the post-match press conference, Shin Tae-yong expressed his disappointment with the team's finishing. "If the players had better finishing, perhaps we could have played a better and easier match," he stated. He emphasized that his team always prepares to score goals, but luck has not been on their side. "We were very unlucky. Going forward, we must improve this aspect to score more goals," added the South Korean coach.
This victory means Persija has swept their first three matches with wins. They now have nine points and sit second in the BRI Super League temporary standings. Nevertheless, the sharpness of the front line remains a crucial note if they want to compete at the top. Previously, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir highlighted the seriousness of Southeast Asian countries in preparing for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, including Malaysia and Vietnam, who are actively strengthening their squads with naturalized players. This provides an important context for Persija and other Indonesian teams to continuously improve their quality, especially in the efficiency of their finishing.
For Indonesian readers, Persija's performance at the start of this season shows great potential but also underscores the importance of sharpness in front of goal. In modern football, ball possession dominance does not always guarantee big wins. Moving forward, Shin Tae-yong is challenged to hone his players' finishing, especially when facing more compact teams. If they can improve this aspect, Persija has a great chance to compete for the championship. The question is, can the Kemayoran Tigers convert dominance into more goals in subsequent matches?
