Singapore National Team coach, Gavin Lee, is well aware that the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is not just an ordinary tournament. He predicts that Premier Division Group A will be tight, as Singapore must compete with Malaysia, Bangladesh, and host Indonesia. The opening match against Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday evening (25/9/2026), will immediately be a tough test for The Lions.
In an official statement from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), Gavin affirmed that his team has anticipated various difficult scenarios. According to him, both bitter and sweet experiences in this tournament are precisely what is needed to build a more resilient squad character. He also emphasized the importance of the players' attitude in facing obstacles, learning from every match, and continuing to move forward together.
Singapore cannot be underestimated. In the AFF Cup 2026, they advanced to the semifinals and recorded a historic 2-1 away victory against Thailand in the second leg, although they were ultimately eliminated with a 3-4 aggregate score. Previously, in the group stage, Singapore also held Indonesia to a 1-1 draw, a result that sent them to the semifinals alongside Vietnam, while Indonesia had to pack their bags.
"We anticipate significant challenges in this competition. There will be good performances as well as difficult moments, but these experiences are necessary if we want to become a stronger team," said Gavin Lee.
The 36-year-old coach also expressed his gratitude for the growing support for the team. He realizes that public trust brings great responsibility. The players and staff have worked hard, and now they are required to maintain standards and build upon the progress already achieved.
From the announced list of 23 players, several key names have been retained, such as Izwan Mahbud, Ilhan Fandi, Song Ui-yong, and Shawal Anuar. Two players with careers abroad, Harhys Stewart (Chiangrai United, Thailand) and Safuwan Baharudin (Selangor FC, Malaysia), also strengthen the squad. This composition shows Singapore blending regional experience with the quality of players accustomed to competing at the ASEAN club level.
For Indonesia, Singapore's presence in Group A adds weight to the competition. As hosts, the Indonesian National Team is expected to leverage supporter backing at Gelora Bung Karno but also faces immense pressure to achieve maximum results. The opening match against Singapore will be an early indicator of Indonesia's ambitions in this tournament, as well as a test of the players' mentality against an opponent currently in positive form.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 also serves as a stage for Singapore to hone their skills before the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Gavin Lee hopes this tournament will be a stepping stone to address shortcomings and improve team quality. With fierce competition in Group A, every match will be a valuable lesson for The Lions.
The question is, can Indonesia leverage its host status to dominate the group, or will Singapore once again steal the spotlight as they did in the AFF Cup 2026? The answer will begin to unfold in the upcoming opening match.
