London — Tottenham Hotspur faces a complex situation ahead of the closure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) transfer window next week. Striker Richarlison has reportedly rejected a move to UAE club Shabab AlAhli, which had previously inquired about financial terms. This rejection leaves Spurs with only seven days to reach an agreement or lose the opportunity to secure fresh funds from the sale of a player whose contract runs until 2027.
Richarlison's decision to remain in north London, despite no longer being part of coach Roberto De Zerbi's plans, extends a transfer saga that has been ongoing since the summer. Previous attempts to move to Trabzonspor and Vasco da Gama also failed. De Zerbi has openly stated that the Brazilian player will not return to the squad, even if fit to play.
According to football journalist Alasdair Gold, interest from the UAE was indeed serious. Shabab AlAhli had contacted Richarlison's representatives to ascertain Tottenham's desired transaction value. However, no official offer has been submitted yet. “Richarlison’s situation is getting more complicated by the day. There is interest from the UAE, but I’m told a move to that league doesn’t appeal to him at this moment,” Gold stated.
On the other hand, a 2-3 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend added pressure on De Zerbi. Goals from Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson, and Emiliano Buendia overturned Spurs' temporary lead, which had come through Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke. This loss marked Tottenham's worst start in the last 15 years. De Zerbi admitted that the international break could be an opportune time to address the team's physical and mental condition.
“I am very disappointed, sad, and frustrated with this performance. We cannot lose in this manner. The second goal we conceded was truly nonsensical,” De Zerbi said in a press conference.
In addition to Richarlison, forward Mathys Tel also came under scrutiny after not being included in the squad against Villa. De Zerbi explained that the decision was technical, and he had spoken directly with the French player. “I explained the reasons to Mathys yesterday. He accepted it well. He has also played more than others,” he stated.
With Richarlison increasingly close to an exit and Tel also sidelined, De Zerbi's attacking options are predicted to become more limited. This situation could force Tottenham to seek replacements in the winter transfer window or rely on young players from the academy.
For Indonesian football fans, these dynamics at Tottenham reflect how major European clubs face financial and competitive pressures. Aggressive transfer policies do not always guarantee instant results, and poor squad management can lead to significant losses. Richarlison's story also serves as a reminder that player decisions do not always align with club interests, especially concerning league preferences and career prospects.
Moving forward, Tottenham must quickly find a solution to avoid further decline. Will they force Richarlison to accept an existing offer, or will they hold on, risking the loss of a valuable asset for free? Time is running out, and pressure is mounting.
