JAKARTA โ Persija Jakarta defender Shayne Pattynama has received a late call-up to strengthen the Indonesian National Team for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, scheduled to take place from September 25 to October 5. This confirmation was announced via Persija's official Instagram account, @persija, on Sunday (20/9/2026), a day after coach John Herdman released the initial 23-man squad which did not include Pattynama's name.
This call-up places Shayne on the roster to reinforce the Garuda squad, despite initial doubts about his status. Previously, Herdman had finalized the team composition for this new FIFA-sanctioned tournament, held every four years. Now, Persija will send a total of six players to the National Team, making it the club with the most contributions so far.
In addition to Shayne, the other five Persija players called up are Nadeo Argawinata, Rizky Ridho, Jordi Amat, Dony Tri Pamungkas, and Rayhan Hannan. Their presence strengthens the team's foundation, especially in the defensive line, which is a crucial area in Herdman's scheme. However, attention is particularly focused on Shayne because he has not yet featured in any of Persija's first three matches in the BRI Super League 2026/2027 due to an unrecovered injury.
This call-up raises questions about the 28-year-old player's physical readiness. Shayne last played for the Indonesian National Team in the 2026 AFF Cup, where he appeared in four matches. Born in Lelystad, Netherlands, on August 11, 1998, he is known as a fullback with international experience, but his absence from domestic competition makes his playing time in the upcoming tournament questionable.
"Shayne Pattynama has received a call-up to strengthen the Indonesian National Team for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Good luck, Shayne!" wrote the @persija Instagram account.
For Persija, the contribution of these six players underscores the club's role as a primary supplier of National Team talent. However, consequently, the Kemayoran Tigers will lose several key players while domestic competition is underway. This will test the squad's depth, especially if the tournament coincides with a packed BRI Super League schedule.
From the National Team's perspective, Shayne's presence adds options in the defensive sector, although Herdman will likely need to wisely manage the workload of a player recovering from injury. The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 itself is a new tournament expected to enhance competition among ASEAN nations. With its quadrennial format, this event serves as an important stage for Indonesia to gauge its strength at the regional level.
The decision to call up Shayne can be interpreted as a signal that Herdman still relies on his international experience, regardless of his fitness. If he can return to his best form, a partnership with Jordi Amat in the backline could form a solid wall. Conversely, if injuries continue to plague him, this move risks becoming a burden for both the team and the player himself.
The question now is: can Shayne prove his quality amidst the doubts, or will this call-up set a bad precedent for a player who hasn't fully recovered? We will see in a matter of days.
