Indonesia National Team's Frontline at FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026: Ole Romeny the Mainstay, Vickery a Debutant Worth Watching

The Indonesia National Team will begin their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 campaign next week, facing Singapore, Malaysia, and Bangladesh in Group A of the Premier Division. Coach John Herdman has named his 23-man squad, and one of the most scrutinized sectors is the attacking line. Ole Romeny emerges as the main focal point, but there are several intriguing options that could provide a surprise.

In the released squad list, Herdman has included five players for attacking positions. Two of them are pure central strikers: Ole Romeny and Mitchell Baker. Although he has fewer caps than Romeny, Baker has proven his sharpness by scoring four goals in four appearances in the AFF Cup 2026. His performance with club Georgetown also provides Herdman with more reasons to give him playing time.

"The presence of Baker and Vickery gives us attacking variations that no other team in the group possesses," said a tactical observer who wished to remain anonymous.

Interestingly, Marselino Ferdinan's absence due to injury opens the door for Luke Vickery to make his debut. This player, who has never represented the Indonesia National Team at senior level, plays as a right winger, a position usually occupied by Marselino. If Herdman dares to give him a chance, Vickery could be a surprise that changes the dynamics of Indonesia's frontline.

Meanwhile, Ragnar Oratmangoen and Egy Maulana Vikri remain key players on the wings. Ragnar, now donning the Persib Bandung jersey, is in a period of adjustment after moving from Groningen. He is expected to rediscover his best form, especially after scoring a goal and an assist in the FIFA Matchdays last June. Egy is no less important; with Dewa United in the BRI Super League, he has consistently been a starter and contributed.

With this composition, Herdman has numerous options for crafting his attack. He could play Romeny as a lone striker supported by Ragnar and Egy on the wings, or deploy a Romeny-Baker duo to provide aerial strength. This flexibility is a significant advantage, especially since the tournament has a packed schedule, making player rotation a necessity.
