Liverpool are reported to have reached an agreement to sign young Colombian attacking midfielder Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional. The deal, worth around ยฃ750,000, was completed long before the summer 2027 transfer window, with Martinez set to join officially only after he turns 18 next April.
The decision by The Reds' management to recruit a player who has never appeared at senior level has sparked speculation that the club is preparing a long-term successor to Florian Wirtz. The ยฃ116 million German has yet to show consistency since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, and this season has recorded just one assist in the Premier League.
According to reports, Martinez rejected offers from 29 other clubs to choose Liverpool. His versatility as a No. 10 and No. 8 midfielder makes him regarded as a direct threat to Wirtz in attacking midfield. Martinez's performances at youth level have also caught the eye: he averaged 5.2 successful dribbles per match with a 78% success rate while playing for Colombia U-17 at the CONMEBOL U-17 Championship, far surpassing Wirtz's average of 1.3 successful dribbles in the Premier League this season.
Football analyst Bence Bocsak describes Martinez as a "very exciting talent" and predicts he could become a top-class No. 10 or No. 8 midfielder in the future. His nimble, elegant playing style in tight spaces has often been compared to Philippe Coutinho, and some even liken him to Kaka because of his extraordinary potential.
"Liverpool are getting a very exciting talent. He could become a top No. 10 and No. 8 midfielder in the future," said Bocsak.
Although still 17 years old and without senior-team experience, Martinez has shown his quality with the Colombia U-17 national team that won the CONMEBOL U-17 Championship earlier this year. He contributed two assists in six appearances, demonstrating fine vision and technical ability.
For Liverpool, this move is a long-term strategy to strengthen squad depth. Current manager Iraola still trusts Wirtz, giving him starts in the first four Premier League matches of the season. However, if Wirtz's performances do not improve, pressure to give opportunities to young players like Martinez could increase.
FSG's decision to sign Martinez is also inseparable from fierce competition in the transfer market. As many as 29 clubs were reportedly interested, but Martinez chose Liverpool because he believes in the youth development pathway at Anfield. This aligns with the club's policy of often recruiting promising talents from South America, as it did with Coutinho and Luis Diaz.
From a tactical point of view, Martinez's arrival could prompt a formation change. Currently, Iraola more often plays a 4-2-3-1 with Wirtz as the attacking midfielder. However, with Martinez also able to play as a No. 8, the option of switching to a 4-3-3 with three hard-working midfielders such as Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, and Gravenberch becomes more open.
For Liverpool fans in Indonesia, Martinez's arrival adds to the appeal of following The Reds' academy and youth teams. Premier League clubs indeed have a large fan base in Indonesia, and the transfer of talented young players is often a hot topic on social media. If Martinez succeeds, he could become a new idol, much like Coutinho in his time.
Clearly, Wirtz's future at Liverpool is now at stake. With a sky-high price tag and high expectations, he is under pressure to rediscover his best form soon. If not, it is not impossible that Martinez will take over his position sooner than expected. Will Wirtz be able to bounce back, or will he instead become a victim of inevitable regeneration?
