Director General of Taxes Bimo Wijayanto said that hundreds of officials inaugurated during the tenure of Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa will undergo a review. Officials who fail to meet standards of capability and eligibility will be removed from their posts, while the rest will remain.
Bimo made the statement at his office on Wednesday (16/9/2026), responding to the controversy over the mass reshuffle that took place on 10 September 2026—a few days before Purbaya was removed by President Prabowo Subianto. The reshuffle involved hundreds of officials within the Ministry of Finance, including at the Directorate General of Taxes and the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
According to Bimo, the main issue was not merely the rotation, but the fact that a number of names got through without undergoing the assessment process, talent management, or examinations that serve as the official path for employee promotion. This practice triggered internal uproar and sparked protests from employees who had gone through the standard procedures.
"That was our proposal, the rotation, but there were indeed some 'magic names' that did not go through the assessment process, talent management, and that is what made me and the Director General of Customs and Excise ask for it to be postponed first, cancelled," Bimo explained.
Bimo, together with Director General of Customs and Excise Djaka Budi Utama, formally submitted a request to the new Finance Minister, Suahasil Nazara, for the reshuffle to be cancelled. If the cancellation is carried out, the affected officials will be returned to their positions before being inaugurated by Purbaya. "Yes, back to their original positions," Bimo said firmly.
For the public, especially businesses and investors, this controversy is not merely internal bureaucratic dynamics. The Directorate General of Taxes and the Directorate General of Customs and Excise are two institutions that manage state revenue and shape the climate of fiscal compliance. Uncertainty in leadership at the technical level could disrupt service stability, from tax audits to the resolution of customs disputes.
Bimo highlighted the psychological impact of a reshuffle deemed to have deviated from procedure. According to him, employees who had gone through a rigorous selection process felt disadvantaged when some parties obtained positions without following the same path. "Because the signal is not good for the other troops, who went through all the trouble, took the assessment, took the exams, took the talent management," he said.
This re-evaluation step is an early test for Suahasil Nazara in rebuilding internal trust at the Finance Ministry. His decision will determine whether bureaucratic reform within the fiscal authority continues on the principle of meritocracy, or instead opens room for broader political intervention. The bond market and businesses will watch closely whether the cancellation is actually carried out, since consistency in fiscal policy is one of the determining factors for the investment climate.
Going forward, the question is not only who is removed or retained, but how transparent the evaluation process is. Without an open explanation of the criteria and the results of the review, the 'magic names' controversy risks resurfacing every time there is a rotation of officials within the Ministry of Finance.
