- Mike Flanagan tengah menulis skenario adaptasi terbaru Stephen King, "The Mist", dan berencana menyelesaikannya sekitar Halloween.

Mike Flanagan, the director known for "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Doctor Sleep", is working on a new adaptation of Stephen King's novella, "The Mist". In an interview with Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, Flanagan revealed that he is currently writing the screenplay, even working on it on the plane to the festival. "I'm writing it right now. I'm working on it on the plane here," he said.
The project is part of a deal with Warner Bros confirmed earlier this year. Flanagan is not only writing and directing, but also producing through his production company, Red Room Pictures, alongside Tyler Thompson and Gary Barber and Chris Stone from Spyglass. Alexandra Magistro serves as executive producer. Although the screenplay is targeted for completion near Halloween, there has been no official announcement regarding the production schedule or casting.
Flanagan stressed that his adaptation will take a different direction from Frank Darabont's 2007 film, which he called "amazing" and "brutal". "There's no point in repeating the same thing, so I can do something new, which is always fun," he said. This new approach aligns with Flanagan's track record of often bringing unique interpretations to each adaptation of King's work, such as "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep".
"The Mist" first appeared in King's short story collection, "Skeleton Crew", and has been adapted into a 2007 film starring Thomas Jane, as well as a 2017 television series. The story centers on a small town in Maine hit by a mysterious mist that brings forth terrifying creatures, forcing a group of people to take shelter in a grocery store. As is typical of King's work, the chaotic situation not only presents external terror but also reveals the dark side of humanity, including the emergence of mob mentality and uncontrollable extremists.
"After he heard my approach and why I wanted to do it that way, he gave his blessing before I wrote the screenplay. And, if he hadn't given his blessing, I wouldn't have made that film." - Mike Flanagan on Stephen King's blessing for "Doctor Sleep".
For the Indonesian market, this project has the potential to be an eagerly awaited watch, given the sizable fan bases of Stephen King and Mike Flanagan. King adaptations often receive widespread attention, and with Flanagan's distinctive approach, "The Mist" could be one of the most anticipated releases. Moreover, Flanagan's success with "Doctor Sleep" shows that he is capable of delivering work that is faithful yet still fresh, a formula that could attract global audiences, including in Indonesia.
Looking ahead, the question is how far Flanagan will take "The Mist" out of the shadow of previous versions. With King's blessing, which he always prioritizes, and a clear vision, the project has the potential to become the definitive adaptation. Will Flanagan deliver more psychological terror or something more visceral? Time will tell, but enthusiasm is already palpable among fans.
