The horror film Obsession will stop streaming on Peacock on 17 November 2026, coinciding with its launch on Netflix for the United States. The move marks the end of the film's run on Peacock less than four months after its debut on 17 July 2026.
Although produced for just USD 750,000, Obsession became a phenomenon. In its first week in cinemas, the film took USD 17.2 million, then jumped to USD 23.9 million in its second week. To date, its total global revenue has reached USD 523 million, placing it as the tenth highest-grossing film of 2026 according to Box Office Mojo.
Its success on the big screen carried over to streaming. Nielsen data shows that in its first two days on Peacock, Obsession was watched for 456 million minutes. The film also stayed for more than 150 days in JustWatch's US streaming top 10 list, reinforcing its dominance in the entertainment industry.
More than just a box office hit, Obsession became a cultural phenomenon. Online discussions buzzed about the film's themes of bodily autonomy and consent. Halloween Horror Nights in California drew thousands of visitors, including actress Inde Navarrette, who plays Nikki Freeman. Even the game Fortnite featured a Nikki Freeman character skin complete with a "No, No, No..." emote in November 2026.
"That's when you start getting imposter syndrome: What? It's not that good. All I see when I watch 'Obsession' is the problems," said Curry Barker, the director and screenwriter, in an interview with the Associated Press in June 2026.
The film tells the story of Bear (Michael Johnston), a lonely man who harbors feelings for his best friend, Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette). After failing to confess his love, Bear finds the One Wish Willow in a shop selling oddities. He wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world. But the wish turns into a nightmare.
Polygon critic Jesse Hassenger praised Navarrette's performance. According to him, Navarrette convincingly builds the character of Nikki before Bear's wish transforms her. "Navarrette is stunning as the replica version, often bursting with agitation or manic laughter, creating a combination of fear and pityโa movie monster that fuses possession with Bride of Frankenstein," he wrote.
Obsession's move to Netflix coincides with the approach of awards season. Focus Features, the film's studio, is said to be aggressively pushing for Academy Awards nominations. The company's official site lists Obsession for Best Picture, Inde Navarrette for Best Actress, and Curry Barker for Best Original Screenplay.
For horror fans in Indonesia, this move is worth watching. Although Netflix Indonesia may not offer the same title on the same date, global distribution patterns are becoming more fluid. The presence of Obsession on Netflix could broaden its audience reach, including in Indonesia, provided the broadcast rights for Southeast Asia are available. This phenomenon also shows that a low-budget film can go global if it has a strong premise and cultural momentum.
Looking ahead, can Obsession maintain its relevance on Netflix and win the sympathy of the film academy? Or will this move be its final peak before the film sinks in the flood of new content? Either way, the film's journey from a modest production to a global phenomenon will be a lesson for the independent film industry.
