Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have added Gustavo Varela, the Monza striker who currently leads the Serie A scoring charts, to their list of targets. The interest has emerged even though coach Roberto De Zerbi has just praised the performances of Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush in the last match.
Spurs' decision to pursue a new striker is not without reason. Although the team is on a positive run with three consecutive Premier League wins, the productivity of the front line has come under scrutiny. The 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last Saturday was in fact decided by goals from defenders Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke, after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off before the 15th minute.
Solanke has scored just one goal in nine league appearances this season, while Marmoush has also found the net only once from eight opportunities. De Zerbi did praise the contribution of both, especially when losing the ball, but the need for a pure finisher is growing more urgent. Richarlison also appears to have been sidelined, having not featured at all since the 0-3 defeat to Brentford in the opening week.
Varela has become a phenomenon in his first season with Monza. Although his team lost 1-2 at Bologna over the weekend, his ninth goal remained a signal of rare sharpness for a 21-year-old player. Talent scout Jacek Kulig even described Varela's performances as "sensational" after scoring against the big teams.
"Marmoush, Solanke, very good, especially when we lose the ball. That is a clear signal that they are involved in the game," De Zerbi said, as quoted by Football FanCast.
De Zerbi's praise does not immediately close the gap in the attack. Tottenham's management appears to be thinking long-term by targeting a young striker who is on fire. However, their move will not be smooth. Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and Fulham are reported to have also sent scouts to watch Varela in action in person.
For Tottenham, the pursuit of Varela is a bet between instant needs and future projection. On one hand, they need goals to maintain momentum at the top of the table. On the other, Varela is a promising investment whose price could soar if he keeps scoring. Competition among Premier League clubs will also make negotiations with Monza potentially tough.
If Spurs fail to land Varela in the January transfer window, it is not impossible they will turn to another option in the summer. What is clear is that Tottenham's front line remains a work in progress for De Zerbi, and the upcoming transfer market will test the club's ambition to compete at the highest level.
