Younes Ebnoutalib was the hero of Eintracht Frankfurt's narrow 1-0 win over Cologne on matchday six of the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old's lone goal came in the 77th minute after he latched onto a through ball from substitute Noëll Aséko. The victory also ended Frankfurt's home win drought this season.
Frankfurt went into the match under heavy pressure after being thrashed 0-6 by RB Leipzig the previous week. Coach Adi Hütter made three changes, starting Fares Chaïbi, Mario Götze, and Ebnoutalib from the first minute. Meanwhile, Cologne, coached by René Wagner, also rotated, fielding Tom Krauß in place of the injured Ellyes Skhiri and handing Joël Schmied his first start. On the home side, goalkeeper Noah Atubolu made his 100th Bundesliga appearance.
The match was fierce from the start. Cologne nearly scored in the opening seconds when Marius Bülter beat the offside trap, but Atubolu denied his shot. In the 30th minute, Bülter threatened again with a header from a free kick, but Atubolu was alert once more. Frankfurt responded through Chaïbi and Ebnoutalib, but Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe kept his goal intact. The 0-0 scoreline held until half-time.
In the second half, Frankfurt played more aggressively. Ebnoutalib, Chaïbi, and Brassier took turns testing Schwäbe, but less composed finishing wasted the chances. The goal finally came in the 77th minute thanks to fine link-up play between Aséko and Ebnoutalib. Aséko, who had just come on as a substitute, delivered a precise pass, and Ebnoutalib calmly beat Schwäbe from a tight angle. Cologne tried to equalize through substitute Reigan Heskey, but Atubolu was brilliant between the posts. Borna Sosa received a yellow card late in the match, but Frankfurt held on to their lead until the final whistle.
The win means a great deal to Frankfurt, who had been reeling after the heavy defeat in Leipzig. Ebnoutalib, named Man of the Match with 60 percent of the vote, was the main threat to Cologne's defense throughout the match. Although Cologne had the earlier chances, Frankfurt's efficiency in the second half paid off fully. The xG statistics show Frankfurt deserved the win at 1.68 to 0.49, even though the winning goal came from a chance that was not particularly big.
For Cologne, the defeat is a blow after a promising start to the season. Coach René Wagner must find solutions to sharpen the attack, especially since Bülter failed several times to convert golden chances. Meanwhile, Frankfurt will try to maintain this momentum to climb up the standings. The big question is whether Ebnoutalib can consistently be Frankfurt's main striker this season. Only time will tell, but his fine performance against Cologne at least gives Die Adler new hope.
