Everton are reportedly preparing a concrete move to sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane in the January transfer window. The interest comes after The Toffees failed to strengthen their forward line adequately last summer, leaving Thierno Barry as the only senior striker in David Moyes' squad.
The need for a new striker is becoming increasingly urgent given the packed Premier League schedule and the lurking risk of injury. Barry has indeed been impressive early in the season with six goals, including one in a 2-2 draw against Hull City. However, he was recorded as squandering four golden chances in that match, a figure that shows his finishing still needs sharpening.
Football Insider reports that Everton have made Kofane their primary target. The Cameroon-born striker is seen as having a profile that suits the needs of Premier League clubs. Football analyst Pete O'Rourke rates Kofane as a complete package. "He is a tall, big striker, but also very mobile. He can play wide or through the middle, so I think that is why he meets a lot of criteria for Premier League clubs," he said.
Even so, Everton's attempt to recruit Kofane in January will not run smoothly. Leverkusen are said to be reluctant to let go of their young player amid limited options in attack. Die Werkself still need squad depth to compete in the Bundesliga and European competition, so they are likely to reject any offers that come in this winter.
"Kofane is likely to be high on Everton's list of main targets in 2027. We know Everton want to strengthen their attacking options after failing in the summer," said Pete O'Rourke.
If Everton insist on bringing in Kofane, they must prepare a persuasive strategy, both in terms of transfer value and guaranteed playing time. As a young player still developing, Kofane needs regular minutes to hone his ability. At Leverkusen, he is indeed often used as a substitute, but has been able to show his sharpness when given the chance.
Kofane's name has itself attracted the attention of a number of observers. Journalist Eduardo Hagn and scout Jacek Kulig have called him one of the most exciting strikers in Europe at the moment. The praise is not excessive given that he is still 20 years old, yet has been trusted to play at Bundesliga and European level.
For Everton, signing Kofane could be a statement of ambition that the club is serious about competing in the upper mid-table of the Premier League. However, the financial risk and the adaptation of a young player from the German league to England still need to be taken into account. The Merseyside club must also compete with Aston Villa, who are reported to be monitoring Kofane's situation as well.
It will be interesting to see whether Everton move quickly in January or wait until the summer. If Leverkusen hold their ground, The Toffees may need to shift focus to alternative targets such as Tommy Lonergan of Waterford, although the Irish player is untested in a top European league. Everton's management decisions over the coming weeks will be an indication of how serious their ambition is for the rest of this season.
