Disney has officially confirmed the development of an animated Artemis Fowl series set to air on Disney Channel and Disney+. The announcement was made directly by series creator Eoin Colfer during the 25 Years of Artemis Fowl panel at New York Comic Con on Sunday (13/10/2024). The move marks Disney's effort to revive a fantasy franchise that had dimmed after the 2020 live-action film drew sharp criticism.
The animated series is expected to "delve deeper into the characters and mythology" of the fairy world created by Colfer. Unlike the previous adaptation, this project places Colfer as executive producer, alongside Ben Juwono (Emmy and Annie Award winner) and Colleen Evanson. Both are known for works such as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and DuckTales, signaling that Disney is serious about narrative and visual quality.
Disney's decision to switch to an animated format is not without reason. The live-action Artemis Fowl film, released directly to Disney+ in 2020, received negative reviews and was eventually pulled from the platform. That failure became a lesson that the complexity of the fairy world—with its high technology and genius teenage characters—is better visualized through animation, which can explore imagination without the budget limits of special effects.
President of Disney Kids & Family, Ayo Davis, stated that for more than two decades, Colfer's books have captivated readers worldwide with unforgettable characters and thrilling adventures. According to her, the animated series is an opportunity to introduce Artemis to a new generation while celebrating the loyal fans who have followed his story for years.
"I'm proud and happy to be part of the great team bringing Artemis Fowl animation to the screen. Everyone is so talented and positive, I'm confident the fairy world is in the right hands," said Colfer.
Since the first novel was published in 2001, the Artemis Fowl series has produced 11 books, one short story, and one companion book. Total sales have reached more than 35 million copies and been translated into 48 languages. This large fan base is a strong asset for Disney to attract new subscribers to its streaming service, especially amid fierce competition with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
For the Indonesian market, this news could strengthen Disney+ Hotstar's position as a leading platform for family content. Animated series are generally more easily accepted across ages and can drive a surge in new subscribers, especially in the Gen Z and millennial segments that grew up with the Artemis Fowl books. However, Disney has not announced a release date, so it remains unclear whether the project will air in 2025 or 2026.
Going forward, the success of this series will depend on the creative team's ability to preserve the essence of the story while delivering relevant updates. If successful, it is not impossible that Disney will expand the franchise into other formats, such as spin-offs or feature animated films. Will Artemis Fowl finally find the right home in the world of animation?
