Legendary actor Michael J. Fox received Canada's highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada at the Companion level, in a ceremony at Rideau Hall, Ottawa, on Friday (10/2/2026). The award was given in recognition of his strong global advocacy and uncompromising openness about the Parkinson's disease he lives with.
Fox, widely known for his role as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, appeared in public in a rare moment. Governor General of Canada Louise Arbour led the ceremony and delivered a touching speech. "Your example reminds us of something very fundamental: sustained progress demands that we move forward with courage, imagination, and determination," Arbour said, adding, "After all, going back to the future has always been a far better idea than going forward to the past."
Fox's promotion to the Companion level had been announced earlier this year, after he was previously awarded the Officer level in 2010. He was among 51 people invested into or promoted within the Order of Canada that day. The Office of the Governor General stated that Fox is in an extraordinary chapter of his life, combining select acting work with strong global advocacy and fearless honesty about Parkinson's. "Through his foundation, he has driven transformative research and hope. He has inspired millions around the world by channeling his voice through writing, public speaking, and the acclaimed 2023 documentary Still," the statement said.
Fox's journey as an advocate began after he disclosed his diagnosis in 1998. A year later, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has since channeled more than $3 billion into Parkinson's research. "I wanted to advocate for Parkinson's disease and raise money," Fox recalled in his speech upon receiving the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the Emmy Awards last month. "I found people to lead this effort and vowed to fund the best science in the world. I am proud of the progress we have made to help Parkinson's patients and families. We are getting closer to eradicating this disease forever."
"I realized that accepting Parkinson's did not mean I had to give in to it. It only meant I had to do everything I could for everyone living with this disease." โ Michael J. Fox
In his Emmy speech, Fox also recounted how he initially kept his diagnosis secret out of fear it would affect his career and his relationship with audiences. But the support he received instead lifted his spirits. "I was surprised by the support from all of you, so uplifted, and I did not lose what I do. They could not take it from me. And that is because you stood up for me," he said. He also stressed that accepting Parkinson's does not mean giving up, but rather doing as much as possible for fellow patients.
The award adds to a long list of recognitions for Fox's dedication. Besides the Order of Canada, he has received various humanitarian awards, including the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. His achievements span not only entertainment but also philanthropy and health advocacy. His foundation has become one of the largest nonprofits funding Parkinson's research, with a focus on developing therapies and, one day, a cure.
For Canada, the honor also reflects appreciation for a citizen who contributes globally. Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and began his acting career in Canada before achieving fame in Hollywood. Today, he is recognized not only as a pop culture icon but also as a health advocate who inspires many.
Looking ahead, the remaining question is how far the impact of Fox's advocacy will go in accelerating Parkinson's research. With billions of dollars in funding and rising public awareness, the hope for medical breakthroughs is increasingly open. Yet challenges remain, especially in terms of equitable access to care across countries. Fox's story is a reminder that behind the glittering screen of Hollywood lies a real struggle that has changed many lives.
